Praise for Thomas Mullen's Darktown: Writes with a ferocious passion thatll knock the wind out of you. The New York Times Book Review Reads like the best of James Ellroy. Publishers Weekly (starred review) Mullen is a wonderful architect of intersecting plotlines and unexpected answers. The Washington Post From the acclaimed author of The Last Town on Earth comes the gripping follow-up to Darktown. Officer Denny Rakestraw, Negro Officers Lucius Boggs and Tommy Smith, and Sergeant McInnis have their hands full in an overcrowded and rapidly changing Atlanta. Its 1950 and color lines are shifting and racial tensions are simmering. Black familiesincluding Smiths sister and brother-in-laware moving into Rakes formerly all-white neighborhood, leading some residents to raise money to buy them out, while others advocate a more violent solution. Rakes brother-in-law, Dale, a proud Klansman, launches a scheme to rally his fellow Kluxers to save their neighborhood. When those efforts spiral out of control and leave a man dead, Rake is forced to choose between loyalty to family or the law. He isnt the only one with family troubles. Boggs has outraged his preacher father by courting a domestic, and now her ex-boyfriend has been released from prison. As Boggs, Smith, and their all-black precinct contend with violent drug dealers fighting for turf in new territory, their personal dramas draw them closer to the fires that threaten to consume Atlanta once again. With echoes of James Ellroy and Dennis Lehane, Mullen demonstrates in Lightning Men why hes celebrated for writing crime fiction with a nimble sense of history...quick on its feet and vividly drawn" (Dallas Morning News).

This is a really good series with the 2nd bk being an excellent exploration of racial prejudice in 50's Atlantic through the medium of the true story of the first black police officers in the state. Here, Boggs + Smith stumble on a drugs delivery which leads to investigation into crimes involving white officers + black criminals. While white Rakestraw covers for his br in laws Klan misadventure which went wrong. Great writing , + look fwd to bk 3

Finished! This one took me a long time to read. 😭

The first book Darktown was great and definitely kept my interest.

This one idk. I liked the storyline but it didn't keep me hooked as much. But I did love the unexpected plot twists! The vivid scenes and the character development I thought were well planned and executed. I appreciated the ending as it filled in a lot of gaps.

The third book is out! I'm excited!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ / 5 stars

LoverOfLearning Darktown and Lightning Men are the first 2 books in the series about the first 8 black police officers in Atlanta, GA, in the 1950's. They encounter discrimination, brutality, corrupt white police officers, and dangerous criminals that are too close for comfort. A must read for every historical fiction fan! 4y

Been reading this book for months now because its struggling to keep my interest. It's book 2 of 2. And I have like 100 pages left to finish.

Idk if I should put it on the back burner yet again, finish it, or mark it DNF.

Book one was quite intriguing so I'm frustrated with it

NikkiRobson73 I was the same way I didnt think the second book was even close to the first. 4y
LoverOfLearning @NikkiRobson73 oh wow. Glad someone else feels the same. I'll finish it. Ita so close to being done 4y

This dark and thrilling historical fiction novel is a sequel to the very well-written book Darktown. This 2 book series is about the first police black officers in Atlanta, Georgia and the every day struggles black individuals went through in the 1950's.

It is tough to read in parts but it is over all very eye-opening and the officers stories are extremely inspiring. Can't wait to see how Lightening Men ends!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Sounds good! 5y
LoverOfLearning @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks So far yes. It's not an enjoyable read per say bc the topic is so heavy with racism and brutality. But it is well-written and the storyline feels accurate to the historical timeline. 5y

With echoes of Walter Mosley and Dennis Lehane, Mullen
explores race, law enforcement, and justice in mid-century Atlanta. Battling corrupt cops and ex-cons.
Sequel to Darktown - a good idea would be to read Darktown first. Excellent writing with a worthwhile story. Characters are well-developed and unique. A real eye-opener to the racial problems in the United States. Recommended to those who love historical fiction and mystery thrillers.

LoverOfLearning Loved Darktown and I just started Lightening Men! 5y
EadieB @LoverOfLearning Great! Enjoy! 5y
LoverOfLearning Thanks! I just found out that book 3 called Red Lines is coming out this year 2020! Cool! 5y

SUPER SALE ALERT! I really enjoyed Darktown although it was not an easy read.

LeafingThroughLife Is it weird if I buy this before I own or have read the first one? It's a....long term investment. 😂 7y

This continues the tensions explored in Darktown between the first African American police officers and their white counterparts as well as the racial tensions amongst the non law enforcement citizens. The characters are becoming more developed and Mullen does a fine job of showing the grey areas in what's right or wrong (and it's not all black and white). The race issue is so complex and the racism is so blatant. And Mullen does it right.

Audrey I'm all for #ownvoices, but if you are writing from a different perspective, writers should take lessons from Thomas Mullen. He is a white man, who is writing about complex race issues, mostly from the black perspective, and he does an excellent job. Can't wait for the next one. 7y

I have two books next to me - I can either be a 1950s racist Southern housewife or a Regency-era Scottish Duke. 😳 I think I'll sit costumes out this year. 😂😂

SQUEE!!!! I know I said the only book I cared about this month was the new John Le Carre, but I LIED. I'm a lying liar! I knew a sequel was coming, but I didn't realize this one comes out on the 12th of September! Cue the #grabbyhands and #muppetarmflails.

Darktown was one of the best books I read last year. I. CANNOT. WAIT!!!!!! (and yes, the yelling is totally legitimate).

This follow-up to Darktown releases September 12th. I loved Darktown so much I gave it to loads of folks last year at Christmas. Looks like shopping will be easy this year -- this follow-up is equally good. Historical mystery taking place in Atlanta in the late 1940's.

BostonBookAddict I loved Darktown! Can't wait to get this one too!! 7y

I've been working my way through Mount TBR and have been staying away from book stores and the library lately. But, I've gotten some goodies rolling in from netgalley. Here's what I have left TBR!!! #netgalley

Sassy_Steph My New Years resolutions this year were to stop buying books and to start reading the books I already own! I've read about 2 or 3 books that I already owned but I've only caved and bought two books, they were really cheap and a series I read last year and loved so it was justified! I've been given a lot of books this year hence no whittling down of TBR 7y
