"Readers will treasure Harrisons rich characterization and sharp turns of phrase." Publishers Weekly, Starred and Boxed Review It is New York, 1904, and Dulcy Remfrey, despite an idiosyncratic, traveling childhood, faces the predictable life of a woman of the time. All that changes when her eccentric father returns from his expedition to Africa without any of the proceeds from the sale of a gold mine. It seems hes lost his mind along with the money, and Dulcys obsessive ex-fianc (and her fathers business partner) insists she come to Seattle to decipher her fathers cryptic notebooks, which may hold clues to the missing funds. When her father dies unexpectedly, taking the truth with him, Dulcy looks at her future, finds it unbearable, and somewhere in the northern Rockies disappears from the train bringing her fathers body home. Is it possible to disappear from your old life and create another? Dulcy travels the West reading stories about her own death and finds a small Montana town where shes reborn as Mrs. Nash, a wealthy young widow, free from the burden of family. But her old life wont let go so easily, and soon her ex-fianc is on her trail, threatening the new life she is so eager to create. The Widow Nash is a riveting narrative, filled with a colorful cast of characters, timeless themes, and great set pieces. Europe in summer. New York in fall. Africa in winter. And the lively, unforgettable town of Livingston, Montana. This is a book that surprises with its twists and turns, a ribald sensibility, and rich historical details. And in Dulcy, Jamie Harrison has created an indelible heroine sure to capture the hearts of readers everywhere.

Finally finished this book after having to drag myself through it. I kept thinking that things would pick up after I got about halfway through, I finally realized it would never pick up. Too much extra information and side stories about characters who I could not care less about. The last 40 pages were the best part of the book and I loved the way it ended. Too bad it was a bore.

When her father loses the proceeds from the sale of a goldmine, as well as his sanity, his business partner (who is Dulcy‘s abusive ex-fiancé) summons Dulcy to care for her father and to search his journals for a clue about the missing money.

Walton dies before anyone can find the money and Dulcy fears that she will never escape Victor‘s clutches. She decides to fake her own death and start a new life as a young widow.

This was a sloooow character-driven plot, but I liked it. I liked Dulcy even with (because of?) her flaws. I also like that it was small town gossip, beautifully written. Also, I appreciated that the author didn‘t try to pretend there was no diversity in Montana at the turn of the 20th century. 3.5/5 stars

Also, that makes 5/24 for my #MountTBRChallenge

ElishaLovesBooks Sounds interesting! Thanks for the great review! Stacked! 7y

A little slow to start, but great writing and a look at life in Montana in the early 1900s. This is about a young woman dealing with the death of her eccentric father and running from an abusive ex-fiancé. There is a lot about her deceased father and his prolonged illness with syphilis. Also, a lot about malaria contracted in foreign wars. Thank goodness for modern medicine! A good look at a strong, intelligent woman trying to escape her past.

#TBRtemptation post 8! Dulcy Remfrey traveled the globe with her father, Walton. He comes out of Africa sickly with no money from his gold mines' sale & dies before Dulcy and her ex-fiancée can figure out from his cryptic notebooks what happened. Blamed for his death, she settles into a new life in Montana, but her ex's determined to find her. Rich in characters & settings--from Europe to NYC, Africa to America's West. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Dulcy is a magnificent, complicated protagonist and the supporting cast are, for the most part, idiosyncratic in all kinds of interesting ways. It's also dryly funny and sharp, which was a great surprise. My main complaint is that the story itself feels glossed in an odd way, like the emotional beats were muffled in the prose. Still, it was a good read, enough to make it a solid pick.

#litsypartyofone I was gripped by this book- the prose is so good and the story is unique. Much of it is difficult to read dealing as it does with the effects of syphilis, unrepentant abusers and violence- trigger warnings all over the place. A satisfying ending and an intelligent female protagonist. I give it 4 stars and would recommend- keeping all the above in mind.

Finally my library hold arrived. This book begins with a cool black and white picture of New York. Flipping through I note all chapters begin with vintage photos- identified as public domain from various collections- with the exception of one by Pablo Picasso used under license- can't wait to find out how these fit the story- off I go!!!

Bookish swag for #24in48. My friend, Nina, took all the tote bags we got at Bookcon '17 and made these bags. Just looking at them brings back all the fun we had.

Read the description and I think you'll agree - this one's going to be good!🤓By the way, that blurry image isn't my doing, it's the cover IRL.
