I really enjoyed this Amazon First choice! The WWII-era is my favorite historical time period to read about and this book gave a different perspective and story to the time.
It's a fictional story of a murder investigation in Dresden Germany as the Nazi regime falls. The characters are interesting and I honestly didn't see the ending coming!

Starting a new one...sounds interesting, one of the many free books I downloaded from Amazon, which they can be hit or miss but WW2 era books are some of my favorites so I'm optimistic!

Frank Goldammer, the author really builds the suspense and tension during this time and Detective Heller‘s experience during the fateful firebombing is truly harrowing.....The devastation of the city was total and yet Max continues to hunt the killer... a gruesome, absorbing read

The story was OK. But it didn‘t grip me like I thought it might. What I found myself more interested in while listening was the way that a German writer handled a story about WWII from a German perspective. That was done well; kept me interested and thinking. I will probably still try out the sequel at some point.

This was an excellent story, finely translated, keeping you guessing till the end. I thought I had the mystery figured out. I didn‘t. One of the finest things about the story was describing the continual difficulty with which the detective had to deal with investigating a crime during wartime, and then during occupation. I was dismissive of this Amazon prime book when I picked it as just another WWII book. I was so wrong. 4/5 ⭐️s

Do you experience book coincidences? In Speed the Dawn, which I just finished, the fires in California were compared to the fires from the Allied bombing in Dresden. Book I‘m reading almost simultaneously, tagged, is in part about the fires from the bombing in Dresden.

Leniverse Yes. I very recently read two books, from quite different genres and authors, that both featured the Golem of Prague! 7y
julesG Yes, had similar things happen, too. Different genres but the main characters had the same last name, similar street names, certain historical events being mentioned,... 7y
Texreader @Leniverse @julesG It‘s just uncanny how that happens. It‘s happened once before this year to me, characters with the same names in two different books. One was a bad guy and one a good guy and I struggled to keep them straight while reading both stories. So there really are true coincidences!! 7y

Texreader @Leniverse And I have to know: what were the two books? It sounds familiar... 7y
Leniverse "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" and "Silence Fallen", the 10th Mercy Thompson book by Patricia Briggs. 7y
Texreader @Leniverse Hmmm. Haven‘t read those and yet I‘m sure I‘ve also read a mention of the Golem. I cannot remember the book. Something about a nun. 7y

I chose this one as my Amazon Prime First Reads pick. I wish Amazon would branch out a bit more from WWII-related historical fiction; it seems that‘s the only time period represented in this free program. Nonetheless, this book looks interesting and has 4-1/2 stars on Amazon. Anyone else pick it?

MamaGina I always wait until end of month to choose to see how these get rated ... and you‘re right, more variety needed in historical fiction category🤓 7y
OrangeMooseReads I picked this one as well. I‘m new to the program so haven‘t really noticed similarities in category choices. 7y
