Rain of Gold is a true-life saga of love, family and destiny that pulses with bold vitality, sweeping from the war-ravaged Mexican mountains of Pancho Villa's revolution to the days of Prohibition in California. It all began when Villase or's maternal grandmother sat him down in their little home in the barrio of Carlsbad, California, gave him sweet bread and told him the story of their past. Of his mother Lupe, the most beautiful girl in the whole village who was only a child when Villa's men came shooting into their canyon. And of his father Juan and his family, reduced to rags and starvation as they sought refuge across the border, where they believed that endless opportunity awaited. Lupe and Juan met and fell in love in California, but they found that the doors to the Promised Land were often closed to those from south of the border. His father was forced to take the law into his own hands, in spite of his wife's objections.

Fortunately, yes. Many in fact. The ones that really stand out to me were: Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, Sylvia Day, Lisa See, Victor Villaseñor, Gary Soto, and Sandra Cisneros.

Book seven, my final pick for books that I've read that have either changed me or left a lasting impression.

"For this is God‘s great plan, that people rise up beyond their personal hatreds, here, right now, in this new land where so many different people with so many different bloods have come to join together and that we recognize we are all the children of God! I've posted this book many times. It's my go to recommendation. The story has many of my favorite elements, family, history and magic realism. I'm definitely not going to make 24 hours but I am on track to completing my goal of breaking the 20 hour mark!

One of these days I‘ll read this book that will take me on a journey from #Mexico to California, experiencing the history of Villasenor‘s parents in this sprawling chunkster of a family saga. I read his book Macho! for a Chicano literature class in college, and I meant to read this one after hearing him at a reading when I was in grad school. But it‘s still on the TBR. Story of my reading life. 😏 #Augustisatrip

Victor Villasenor is my favorite #mexicanamericanauthor. His stories are filled with magic realism, the immigration experience and Mexican folklore. I highly recommend him. Start with Rain of Gold, it tells the story of his mother growing up in Mexico and migrating to Southern California.

While perusing my shelves in search of #MexicanOrMexicanAmericanAuthors, I realized that over half of these are from a Chicano lit class I took in college. I'm thankful for that intro... but need to take it further! Rain of Gold is on my #TBR... while I was searching for it, I decided I need to read it this year, along with about 5 more I came across and want to read right now. If only I had time to indulge all my TBR impulses! #maybookflowers

A book that I wish would be made into a movie. This book is in my top 10 of all time favorites. A sweeping historical family drama about immigration from Mexico to Southern California filled with magic realism and characters that resemble people in my own family.

The prose in this book is astoundingly beautiful. A long time favorite and an undeserved underrated author and work. #readingwithoutwalls
