Pickpick

Both a #Scary pick & a #HispanicHeritageMonth pick.

This book of stories is creepy, dark, has a macabre sense of humor, is erotic, and unsettling. There are ghosts, curses, supernatural occurrences, and disturbing obsessions. I like allegorical horror, but I felt like some of these lacked meaning and of the few types of books that I‘ve read that are similar, this is my least favorite. Still, the writing was good and I enjoyed it.

Recommend.

Cathythoughts Nice review! I have this one stacked already 3y
IselaKay @Cathythoughts thanks! It‘s a creepy one, perfect for this time of year. I‘d also like to read her other collection of stories, Things We Lost In The Fire, sometime soon 3y

The Library Dragon | Carmen Agra Deedy, Michael P. White

I don't know how many librarians before me at my school have read this book on the first day a class enters the library, but I think I have read it about 180 times. It's a tradition. The 5th graders hear it for the 6th time if they've been there since kindergarten. We are amazed by how much we notice for the first time during each reread. And they love it. It's so fun to see their reaction when I get it out. #HispanicHeritageMonth #readoutloud

LeslieO I read it every year to my second graders! 3y
mandarchy @LeslieO they light up when they see it coming, ha ha, light up. 🤣 I can't help the puns 3y

Nute Thank you for this list, Ms Cristal. It‘s wonderful to see increasing diversity in literature. I will definitely celebrate the contribution of Hispanic/Lantinx authors with a book or two. 3y

Clap When You Land | Elizabeth Acevedo

Pickpick

Amazing! Acevedo‘s talent is astounding! This novel-in-prose is lyrical, raw, and immersive. The lives of these two sisters are changed irrevocably in one moment and their exploration of love, loss, and grief is something I‘ll think about for a long time. Book 175 of the year! #hispanicheritagemonth #BookBingo #Bingo #ownvoices @TheAromaofBooks

Pickpick

This was my third pick for #HispanicHeritageMonth but it would have easily sufficed as a ‘scary pick‘ for next month! How others have said, it‘s hard to put down, though the pace is a little slow through the first 10-13 chapters—it‘s definitely not boring.

It‘s a creepy, weird, gross, and exceptionally well written book! And it‘s a gothic horror taking place outside of Europe for a change. What‘s not to like? Recommend!

That-Bookish-Hiker Great review! And your conchas look delicious! 4y

Julian Is a Mermaid | Jessica Love

This is a great book that portrays a young boy who loves mermaids, likes to dress up, and is encouraged to be himself!
I recorded myself reading it for Day of Reading; an event hosted by United Way that encourages children to read and learn.

I also picked this book in honor of #HispanicHeritageMonth
