Sidetracked | Henning Mankell
5 posts | 19 read | 2 to read
Fourth in the Kurt Wallander series. In the award-winning Sidetracked, Kurt Wallander is called to a nearby rapeseed field where a teenage girl has been loitering all day long. He arrives just in time to watch her douse herself in gasoline and set herself aflame. The next day he is called to a beach where Sweden s former Minister of Justice has been axed to death and scalped. The murder has the obvious markings of a demented serial killer, and Wallander is frantic to find him before he strikes again. But his investigation is beset with a handful of obstacles a department distracted by the threat of impending cutbacks and the frivolity of World Cup soccer, a tenuous long-distance relationship with a murdered policeman s widow, and the unshakably haunting preoccupation with the young girl who set herself on fire. Fascinating and astute, Sidetracked is a compelling mystery enhanced by keen social awareness."

Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm I have a soft spot for him because he got me back into regular reading once. I read all his books. One after the other & havnt looked back sinse. 👍 7y
andrew61 I've got the last one sat ready to read but am reluctant to lose a favourite character. 7y
Cathythoughts @andrew61 is it the troubled man ? Or is it the new one I‘ve seen around that you have sitting waiting ? I think the new one has been put together sinse his death. I‘m wondering what it would be like. Only one way to find out , I guess ....... and yes , a favorite character for me too 👍 (edited) 7y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts the troubled man. 7y
Cathythoughts @andrew61 that was actually the first one I read & then I went back & read the rest. It‘s really good & it is a real goodbye book ( even tho I read it first) I remember it clearly 7y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts will i need a box of tissues, i know wallander develops alzheimers but I've been reading the series for years it sounded like a sad ending to a favourite character. 7y
Cathythoughts I think he deserves a send off. Read it ! Have the tissues handy ( just in case) @andrew61 I remember the writing was lovely (edited) 7y

Bought this for 108yen (about a dollar) at Book Off in Shibuya today. Didn't realize I had read it years ago but remembered after first chapter. So worth re-reading, love my cranky angst-ridden cops. Now my image of Wallender is Kenneth Branagh since I saw his version; which is just fine.

EricQiao So jealous that you live in Tokyo! 7y
