International sensation Santa Montefiore presents the second book in her romantic and unforgettable Deverill Chronicles trilogy, which follows three Irish women through the decades of the twentieth centuryperfect for fans of Beatriz Williams and Kate Morton. Perched majestically atop the lush emerald hills of West Cork, Ireland, Castle Deverill has been the home to several generations of the Deverills. But when the castle fell prey to a devastating attack during the Irish revolt, the ancestral homes survival was at stakeuntil Celia Mayberry and her husband buy the estate and vow to restore Castle Deverill to its former glory. For Celia, the castle holds many fond childhood memories when she ran through its vast halls with her cousin Kitty Deverill and their cherished friend Bridie Doyle. But not everyone is elated. Although Kitty is grateful to her cousin for purchasing the manor and ensuring it will remain in the family, she cannot help but be wistful for the days when she was the mistress of Castle Deverill. While she is content in her new life with her husband Robert and her adopted son JP, her heart still yearns for Jack OLearythe man she cannot have. As Kitty struggles with her choices, she must make a heartbreaking decision that could bring her the greatest joy, but hurt those closest to her. Now wealthy and the toast of the town in New York City, Bridie Doyle has come a long way since she was a young girl in Ireland and the daughter of one of the maids at Castle Deverill. But all her money cannot ease the pain over giving away her baby. When she finds love, she is tempted to return to her beloved homelandeven if it means she will have to face the woman she still longs to seek revenge against. As Celia wastes no time, or expense, in hiring workers to renovate Castle Deverilleven when the country soon finds itself in the midst of the Great Depressionshe has no idea that her world is about to be shattered. Now everything that felt so certain is cast into doubt as these daughters of Ireland must find the inner strength to build a new future. Nobody does epic romance like Santa Montefiore. Mehso-so

Sadly, this is a so-so when the first in the series was a 5-star read! I found myself skipping and skimming through this one since much of it was too predictable and filled with many boring details. 😱 I hope the 3rd one returns to the captivating and page-turning greatness I found in Songs of Love and War.

Probably won't finish it by January 1st, but that's okay.

This installment was just as delicious as the first - the excitement, horror, thrills, pit in my stomach, glee in my smile! I kept trying to predict what would happen next, and would you believe I kept being wrong?! I am anxious to read the next one to find out how it all ends!

This was a second in a series, which I did not realize when I took it out and started to read. But it was a very good story and missing book one still let me in at a very accessible spot.

Oh my goodness what a great second book of the trilogy!!! I think I enjoyed it better than the first. Ireland, London, Africa, America, I traveled all over the world. 💜💜💜

Awhile ago, I saw this book all over GR and IG with rave reviews. The reviews talked me into a book I was pretty sure wouldn't be my cup of tea. It reads like an Irish telenovela. Seriously. All the angst over love, unrequited love, adulterous love, etc. with some shady business dealings and half hearted revenge plots x2. Just not for me... especially with the ending lining up an equally eye roll worthy third book.

Tamra 😶 Me neither - not my kind of book. (edited) 7y
Jess_Read_This @Tamra whew... l'm happy to know I wasn't alone in my pan. I think she tried to do too much with this one and it ended up as a poorly written soap opera. 7y
Tamra @Jess_Read_This to clarify, I haven't read it, but it sounds exactly what I don't want in a book. 😏 Thank you for the heads-up! 7y

Jess_Read_This @Tamra 😂I'm glad I could save you hours of your life that you couldn't get back. 7y
Tamra @Jess_Read_This 👍🏾 My thoughts exactly when I finish something I'm not crazy about. I was really mad when I read The Goldfinch & Gone Girl. Unpopular opinion, I know. I'm all for bailing & am still practicing listening to my instincts. (edited) 7y
Jess_Read_This @Tamra Not at all- unless we are the only two people that think this.. then we can be unpopular together. I read Goldfinch and was perplexed on the hype. I thought it was ok.. my mind was hardly blown by it. And I just skipped Gone Girl all together... 😉I figured I'd be mad at all the wasted time on that one. 7y

An excellent middle book in what is shaping into an epic trilogy! All of the characters that made their mark in book 1 came back to damage each other some more in their individual quests for happiness in book 2. We also get to meet some new characters that I'm very much looking forward to seeing develop in the final installment. Just wonderful historical fiction! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I haven't been to Ireland, but it's a dream of mine to go. So I always love when it's the setting for a book. This is apparently a trilogy and this is book two. It's my understanding you can read them as stand alones. Can anyone confirm this?

Natalia I just LOVE your photos! 7y
