The Salt-wind | Brandy N?lani McDougall
15 posts | 6 read | 31 to read
This postcolonial collection of poetry is the first by Native Hawaiian poet, Brandy Nalani McDougall. Of the collection, Samoan novelist Albert Wendt writes: "Once in a while a collection of poetry comes along and grabs your eyes, heart, and na'au and makes you see and feel more deeply than you've done in a long, long time. For me, Brandy Nalani McDougall's collection is one of those. And I keep rereading it. Her poems have a unique and hugely inviting surface simplicity and elegance that immediately hook you into them, into their profound and complex depths of imagery, lyricism, political and historical savvy, feeling, thought and vision. These are woven together with unusual wisdom, perception, control of language, and intense aloha for her people and islands. You have to read this collection. It will lift you and make you feel you are more."

KatieDid927 @DebinHawaii I did! They‘re very different! I also loved the magic blue tea! I haven‘t tried the fruity tea yet. 3y
DebinHawaii @KatieDid927 Yes, sometimes the powder is an acquired taste for people. I like it in small doses! 😉 Glad to hear you loved the magic tea. My friend helps the owner of the company with her marketing. I buy their bottled tea a lot too! 3y

Louise Wow! That line comes as a powerful surprise! What a glorious twist! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Louise Yes, I loved that about it and what is says about a lot of society and being a 'good girl' 7y

Beautiful poetry collection, both powerful and vulnerable, moving and raw.

The Salt-Wind Discussion Question #2 How did McDougall's blending of 'Olelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian) language with English convey the complicated history, culture and politics of her people and ancestors in her poetry? How did she use her imagery in her poems to convey the same? Do you think these techniques enhanced your reading experience?

Quirkybooknerd First of all, I want more of this. I want it in novel form and in nonfiction form. I just need more of this voice in my life 7y
TheNextBook @Quirkybooknerd Agreed! I didn't love every single poem but I liked her writing. I would love to see what she could do with a novel. 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheNextBook @Quirkybooknerd I'll third that one. I loved some of the poems, but I loved some of the longer writing segments even more. 7y
Quirkybooknerd Yes! The longer works were my favorite when I could get her voice but I also felt like I got a larger voice through her. I have no idea if that makes sense 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Quirkybooknerd Yes it does, and yes I agree that we need more native voices and more native Hawaiian voices. 7y
Quirkybooknerd Tiny Rebellions from Kamehameha Tales might be my favorite 7y

The Salt-Wind Discussion Question #1 Many of the poems spoke directly to the struggles of the Hawaiian people as a result of colonialism. How did McDougall explore those themes here? Why do you feel that it is important to include these stories into different forms of art, like poetry?

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes! What we don't share, especially from native voices and cultures will be lost otherwise. 7y
