Most Dangerous
Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War | Steve Sheinkin
25 posts | 14 read | 8 to read
A 2015 National Book Award Finalist, reviewed in The Washington Post, as well as featured on the Publishers Weekly "Best Books of 2015" list. From Steve Sheinkin, the award-winning author of The Port Chicago 50 and Newbery Honor Book Bomb comes a tense, narrative nonfiction account of what the Times deemed "the greatest story of the century": how whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg transformed from obscure government analyst into "the most dangerous man in America," and risked everything to expose a government conspiracy. On June 13, 1971, the front page of the New York Times announced the existence of a 7,000-page collection of documents containing a secret history of the Vietnam War. Known as The Pentagon Papers, these files had been commissioned by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. Chronicling every action the government had taken in the Vietnam War, including an attempt by Nixon to foil peace talks, these papers revealed a pattern of deception spanning over twenty years and four presidencies, and forever changed the relationship between American citizens and the politicians claiming to represent their interests. The investigation--and attempted government coverups--that followed will sound familiar to those who followed the scandal surrounding Edward Snowden. A provocative and political book that interrogates the meanings of patriotism, freedom, and integrity, Most Dangerous further establishes Steve Sheinkin as a leader in children's nonfiction.

I‘ve been listening to this audiobook for about a month. Finally finished it today! I don‘t love non fiction but I read everything this author puts out. He makes non fiction read like fiction, and I‘m a big fan. This story was one I hadn‘t heard before, so I was able to learn a lot! I would recommend this one for history fans and non fiction haters alike!

This book is not a “typical” book I would read.
However, this book was very intriguing. It is not written as a “dry” nonfiction. The author did a great job including the facts without bias. It gives insight into the Vietnam War as well as ins and outs & dealings within the White House, and abroad. It gave me a better understanding of what occurred during the Vietnam War & the Watergate Scandal. Factual and enthralling. Highly Recommend

Re: “Pentagon Papers”
“You know...they could hang people for what‘s in there.”

Coverups in the Oval Office have always existed and will always exist.

“From 1966 through 1968, an average of 25,000 men would be drafted every month”
That‘s an eye popping number. 😳
This book is very interesting and provides good insight into the Vietnam War.

This is the best explanation of the motives behind Vietnam that I have ever read. Listed as young adult, but I'd say it's for everyone. It emphasizes how important a free press is, & that journalism is more than writing a blog. It is a responsibility to tell the facts & the truth. This is a book that makes me want to read more on the topic, & will have me thinking about it for a long time to come. I can't give higher praise than that.

Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it.

Chrissyreadit Currently, We Americans seem to have a shorter than fleeting memory of the past. 7y
GeekGrl82 It is so incredibly depressing to see it happening, and feel like you are shouting into the wind. 7y

I'm just going to confess that my knowledge of history is spotty at best and nonexistent at worst. The Vietnam War era is an especially blank spot for me. Maybe because this is a book written for your adults, but I found it so compelling and interesting! It includes enough back story and information about the player's lives to be relevant, but doesn't ever get bogged down. Pretty freaking relevant to today, too.

I wasn't really sure if I would like this and can't actually say I'm enjoying what I'm learning, but I'm definitely invested now that I'm about a third of the way in. I might have uttered a few angry comments while listening on my walk tonight! Additionally, I think I've found my political book for the #ReadHarder Challenge.

Caryl Steve Sheinkin is fantastic. I loved his Port Chicago 50, and I need to read this one and Bomb. 8y
Daisey @Caryl I agree about his books! I've read his one about Benedict Arnold and have a couple others, including Bomb, in my class library. I need to find time to read them as well! 8y

Can't stop listening to this, even though it makes me feel helpless with anger. My dad is a Vietnam vet, but I've always felt the politics behind that war were too complicated for me to grasp. This author gives fantastic history and background and then reveals the political machinations behind the disastrous conflict. Completely comprehensible; reads like a novel.

I listened to the audio and couldn't shut up about it for weeks -- everything I never knew about the secret machinations behind the war in Vietnam and more. EYE OPENING and profoundly resonant to issues today; nothing about mid-century US looks the same after reading. For kids, but also EVERYONE.
