Woman with the Bouquet | Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt
6 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
In his new collection of stories, the beloved author of "The Most Beautiful Book in the World" probes the paradox that the events that shape our lives are often the stuff of dreams, but nonetheless true.

Pickpick

Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt never disappoints me. The way he describes love—so passionate, treasured, obsessive, secretive, withheld, or unrecognized—it truly amazes me. One of my favorite stories was about the wife who killed her husband after suspicions of infidelity, only to find out...not spoiling it😛

There are just five short stories in this collection, but none felt too long. Each had an element of surprise at the end (but not in a terribly shocking way). Translated from the French to English. This lovely cover, and the Europa logo, is what caught my eye at the used bookstore.

batsy Yes, the Europa editions are always draw me in 😊 That's a lovely cover. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @batsy it is pretty isn‘t it? My first Europa was My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante and I have her sequel in my TBR. I have only come across a couple other Europas since. 7y
Gissy It seems a lovely reading for February! I will add it to my wish list. 7y

This lady‘s opinion on new books 😂!

ETA: currently reading the first short story here: “The Dreamer From Ostend”.

Leftcoastzen Sometimes I feel like that. There are many new books that just don‘t have that special something. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Leftcoastzen Good point. I think part of the issue about new books is that it‘s easier to get published nowadays (even if it‘s self-published) , which is both a good and bad thing. I wonder how many of today‘s books will really stand the test of time! 7y
Leftcoastzen @ValerieAndBooks Agree.I am for the light fun read at times, but always hope I find the book with a little something more .I think with literary fiction ,it can be a little harder to get published.Trends are difficult, when a book has huge sales like “Gone Girl” or “Girl on the train”it spawns many mediocre books working the formula. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Leftcoastzen I agree. There‘s a lot of riding on coattails type of stuff out there. 7y

New word to me: opuscules. Have any of you read this short story collection? I stumbled across this volume some time ago and already thinking I wish I had started this sooner.

Redwritinghood Haven‘t heard of it. Sounds intriguing. 7y
DrexEdit That is a terrific word! 😊 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Redwritinghood I probably never would have either if I hadn‘t happened to come across it in an used bookstore! It‘s good so far. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @DrexEdit I agree, although I doubt it‘d ever come up in a normal conversation 😂. 7y
