Nail's Crossing
Nail's Crossing: A Novel | Kris Lackey
6 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
This debut mystery from a fresh voice in Southwestern fiction stakes out the common ground between Tony Hillerman, Elmore Leonard, and Cormac McCarthy. In a remote corner of the Chickasaw Nation, tribal Lighthorse policeman Bill Maytubby and county deputy Hannah Bond discover the buzzard-ravaged body of Majesty Tate, a young drifter with a blank past. They comb Oklahomas rock prairie, river bottoms, and hard-bitten small towns for traces of her last days. Tate was seen dancing with Austin Love, a violent local meth dealer fresh out of prison. An Oklahoma City motel clerk connects her with an aspiring politician. An oil-patch roustabout and a shady itinerant preacher provide dubious leads. Neer-do-wells start dying off. A fluke lead propels Maytubby deep into Louisianas bayou country, where a Cajun shrimper puts him on the scent of a bizarre conspiracy. He and Bond reunite in the Chickasaw Nation for the eventual face-off at Nails Crossing.

I could seriously go for a hot bath! Anyways, Mom picked up some plantation mint tea for me and I told her I want a vintage tea cup for Christmas. I feel autumn coming in every bone in my body so I've made myself a cup of tea with a splash of milk and stevia, turned down my AC and am about to curl up and finish this book! It's been a fun read so far! Lackey hits poverty-stricken southern culture realistically and not with stereotypes. 😻😻😻

BethM Plantation mint from charleston tea? 7y
athorne @BethM Nah, Bigelow. I've never seen the Charleston brand here. 7y
BethM They're likely not much different, but when I toured the plantation I learned the tea flavor comes from the soil. I love their plantation mint and raspberry so I order it online :) 7y
athorne @BethM I'll have to look at that! Dad orders his tea from Zhena's. They have an amazing Egyptian Mint blend! 7y
BethM Ooo I'll have to take a look. 7y

Here's how I'm feeling this morning. Limping around the house because the nerves in my hips decided they were gonna light up today. Canceled plans with my bf, so I'm getting cozy and reading. Also, @BookBabe I found a #Bitmoji that knows our pain. 😹😹😹

DGRachel I hope you feel better soon! 7y
athorne @DGRachel Thanks! 😻 7y
mariaku21 Hope you feel better soon but I guess a book is a good way to spend the day 📚 😉 7y

BookBabe 🍨 Love it! Perfect! 😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7y
BookBabe Hope you feel better. Maybe some Haagen Dazs straight out of the carton would help! 7y
athorne @BookBabe That reminds me! Mom said she has ice cream! 7y
athorne @mariaku21 @Cinfhen @JessClark78 Thank you guys! I've managed to mostly sleep. I've woken up a few times to run to the bathroom, but that's about it. 7y
mariaku21 @TheGhastlyGrimoire Sleep is fantastic. Personally me and sleep have a long love affair in which we just can't get enough of each other but work is constantly our enemy..*shakesfist* 7y

Don't mind the dirt on the wall! I live in a house where the men work with paint and grease so white is a horrid color. 😹😹😹 Anyways. Time for a relaxing soak!

WarpedSweetness That's how my shower looks thanks to kids! Lol 7y
athorne @WarpedSweetness XD I figure if anyone has anything nasty to say about my dirty shower wall, I don't need them in my life! (Unless they wanna come clean! 😹😹😹) 7y
WarpedSweetness @TheGhastlyGrimoire I completely agree! That's how I feel about my whole house. Lol 7y
athorne @WarpedSweetness Mom does too, but there's so many people that come in and out it's impossible. 😹😹😹 Someone made a comment once to her about it, and I had to remind her she was a foster parent so she's gone through so much red tape that the person who made the remark probably couldn't. 7y

#booksandbooze Doing some reading of this #arc while sipping Amaretto and Coke. Also low key having a #panicattack and having to cancel plans.

I want to thank all of my amazing #littens for their comments on the image I posted of myself earlier. You guys are the best. I was on prednisone tapers for the better part of a year so #selflove is a struggle. Thank you guys.

WarpedSweetness Panic attacks suck!! :-/ I've been having them on and off for the past two weeks and been missing work. I'm so sorry you're dealing with them too. :-( 7y
LeeRHarry Take care 💕 7y
athorne @WarpedSweetness They do! I'm actually filing disability because between my depression, anxiety, ulcerative colitis, and messed up back finding an agreeable job is impossible. I don't even know if one exists! 7y

athorne @LeeRHarry Thank you! 💜 (edited) 7y
CatLass007 Good luck filing disability! It will take several months but you must persevere. I suggest hiring an attorney. Most will charge you a percentage of your disability backpay. 7y
athorne @CatLass007 Definitely! Mom doesn't really see why an attorney won't take the case, considering the several combined reasons. I can't even stay awake most days for more than four hours. My good days are few and far between, and when my meds are being adjusted like they are now I quite literally go bonkers. She had to send me to my Dad's, because she couldn't handle me and didn't want me admitted again with so many doctors appointments coming up. 7y
CatLass007 Please keep me posted about how it goes. I lost my job due to my disability (of course, they came up with another, bogus reason). But my former employer has a pattern of dismissing people with disabilities. Illegal, I know, but they always managed to cover it up. What state are you in, if you don‘t mind my asking? FYI, I did eventually get unemployment and, later, disability. (edited) 7y
WarpedSweetness @TheGhastlyGrimoire My Dad has ulcerative colitis and it was no joke. Finding a job when you have medical issues can be so hard. The job I have now has been very understanding and willing to work with me, which is a welcome change from my other jobs. I definitely second the lawyer for disability! It will make it much easier to get. 7y
athorne @CatLass007 @WarpedSweetness Litsy is one of the few places I feel comfortable talking about these sort of things, which I'm grateful for! My mother blames herself for my being diagnosed, but she wasn't diagnosed until I was already in my 20s. I am unfortunate to be in Arkansas, so my age works against me but I don't go down without a fight. Disabilities are why at will employment states are such bullshit! 7y
athorne @CatLass007 @WarpedSweetness I don't foresee any job being okay with how often I need to go to the restroom for extended periods of time, either. :( I'm in remission, as in there is no inflammation presently, but I still go more than six times per day. Sometimes in as little as four hours. Books, Litsy, and my site are how I cope. 7y
CatLass007 Ditto to your comment about at will employment states (Tennessee resident, here, but West Virginia native). 7y
WarpedSweetness Ugh, I agree about at-will employment states. It is awful. We also need better protections in place for those of us with medical issues while at job. That's awful about the peeing a lot. I go alot too due to my medications, but still not as much as you, @TheGhastlyGrimoire . My father and family wouldn't believe that I have mental health issues. They kept telling me I was just "faking it". -_- 7y
athorne @WarpedSweetness I've been there. I was told my mental issues were "in my head." Ironic choice of words, right?! I began showing symptoms of UC back in 2009, but much of my family and significant others dismissed it as my being a hypochondriac. Now they feel a shit ton of guilt because there's an explanation for it all. I don't know what I'd do without my gingerbrats. They may be judgmental assholes, but at least they ain't fake! 7y
athorne @CatLass007 You're close! I'll have to let you know if I go to TN anytime soon! 7y
CatLass007 I‘m in East Tennessee, on the opposite side of the part of the state near Arkansas. But still, closer than other folks. 7y
