Just making a (slow) start on this. Has anyone else read it? If so, what are your thoughts?

October's BOTM's from my fiance! 😍 Never knew that it was possible to have Samuel Pepys diary in two volumes until today! And they have that AMAZING old book smell! 🤤😍
This was not my birthday gift to myself from Booked Up. Even though I can‘t recommend the bookstore I do have to admit there were some amazing OLD collections. I took a picture of one of the earliest collections I saw, the tagged books from 1892. There was a complete illustrated Jane Austen set from about 1905 printed in England. And a complete works of Edgar Allen Poe from early 1900s. Mixed in with the everyday stuff. Sets were $$$$$
Just got back home from the book market and since I bought so much there will be two posts. 🤩😊

Samuel Pepys is famously known for his #lustforlife & the detailed diary he kept that chronicled every aspect of his 17th-century life, even his bouts of indigestion & colds. I've long been meaning to get a copy. There's a Twitter account that tweets his entries in real time. He sounds like quite the character!

1932 "Cameo Classics" edition I got at NOPL's "very old" used book sale.

What sprang to my mind is The Great Fire of London 1666 which I'd just been hearing about on the BBC History Extra podcast (I recommend that!) Much of what is known is thanks to the diary of Samuel Pepys. I plan to read some of it, but it's 9 volumes, so not all! The fire destroyed 90% of the city's homes and although documented deaths were few, its likely that hundreds, probably thousands of the poor perished.
