When I Lived in Modern Times
When I Lived in Modern Times | Linda Grant
11 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
Winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction In the spring of 1946, Evelyn Sert stands on the deck of a ship bound for Palestine. For the twenty-year-old from London, it is a time of adventure and change when all things seem possible. Swept up in the spirited, chaotic churning of her new, strange country, she joins a kibbutz, then moves on to the teeming metropolis of Tel Aviv, to find her own home and a group of friends as eccentric and disparate as the city itself. She falls in love with a man who is not what he seems when she becomes an unwitting spy for a nation fighting to be born. When I Lived in Modern Times is "an unsentimental coming-of-age story of both a country and a young immigrant . . . that provides an unforgettable glimpse of a time and place rarely observed" (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

#Alphabetgame #LetterW @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

I fell under the spell of this novel, an odd romance in a British controlled pre-Israel full of WW2 refugees, cultural mixtures, and all the conflicting unsettled forces.

Other special W‘s:
Ward Six and Other Stories-Anton Chekhov
The Warmth of Other Suns-Isabel Wilkerson
We Have Always Lived in the Castle-Shirley Jackson
Woman of Rome: A Life of Elsa Morante-Lily Tuck

Kitta I almost picked this one too! I loved it. 2y

Graywacke @Kitta 👍 I always feel like it‘s a book that should get more attention than it does. 🙂 2y

Pickpick

London 1946: 20 yr old Evelyn has just lost her mother. With financial help from Uncle Joe, she decides to travel to Palestine to help build the new Jewish state. That turns out to be harder than she thought, but she does settle down among the Jews and gets a job as a hairdresser working for an English woman. And she might find herself caught up in more than she bargained for.

November #BookStats. This was a very tough month for me, anxiety reared its ugly head after the election and I couldn't concentrate long enough to read. 😔 Here's to a better December.

Favourite book and #recommendsday pick: When I Lived in Modern Times by Linda Grant.

DebinHawaii I hope December feels better for you. ❤️ 8y

I meant to come on today to update you all about the books I've been reading while we were in Israel, but we got home in time to watch the election and I stayed up most of the night watching a nightmare become reality. Still processing and trying to get my thoughts together. As an immigrant and a queer woman working in the US without a vote, this has been very difficult to watch.

Sorry for the lack of books today, here's my #littenkitten instead

Kitta She has the sniffles and is snoring, so I tucked her in. 💤 8y

Taking a break from sightseeing to start a new book in this lovely little bookstore cafe in Jerusalem! Really cute little place with a literary themed menu and cocktails! Love it.
