The illustrations were wonderful. The text (verse) left *much* to be desired. The topic is really important/valuable, so I was especially disappointed that the text didn't deliver.

Man Cub and I went out and got all of his #secretsantakids gifts today. I would have rather stayed home, snow and people are not my cup of tea, but all went well and we got what we needed. I found a few books that looked interesting in the children‘s area (I wasn‘t really allowed to look much. For some reason people don‘t like going to the bookstore with me.)

Perks of living in a small town: When you approach the library counter with this stack of books and suddenly realize you forgot your library card, the librarian already knows your name and checks them out for you with no problem!

BucklingBookshelves I just got back from the library ā€” Friday night! By myself! A special treat... but that also means my picture book stack was HUGE because I didn‘t have to worry about the logistics of carrying them plus chasing a toddler LOL. I also forgot my library card š¤¦ā€¨ā™€ļø¸ But they looked me up by my license. Which was excellent so I didn‘t have to go put that huge stack away š™ (edited) 7y

smilingshelves @Bucklingbkshelf That must have been glorious to go to the library by yourself! That's funny that we both forgot our cards on the same day. My problem was that I walked, so I didn't have my license, either! šÆ 7y

BucklingBookshelves I‘ve done that too! And the one woman did know me and looked me up without my ID. The next time I forgot everything, I wasn‘t so lucky. š¤·ā€¨ā™€ļø¸ This time I was driving and thankfully did have my license on me. I have a tag card on my keys and I grabbed the wrong set on my way out. And my ā€regularā€¯ card has been sitting on a dresser and I kept forgetting to put it back in my wallet. š™ This has now been remedied LOL 7y

I‘m no children‘s lit expert, but I bet this book wins some awards. Schomburg was born in Puerto Rico and moved to New York where he started a significant collection of texts by and about Black people. His story is told through the biographies of the people whose stories he pulled from obscurity. What a great way to honor his contribution! And look at that cover illustration; the man is a giant!
