Exhibit Alexandra
Exhibit Alexandra: A Novel | Natasha Bell
9 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
A shocking, original psychological thriller about a mother gone missing and the family she leaves behind, ultimately proving how unknowable even those closest to us can be Alexandra Southwood is missing. Held in a room against her will, she's forced to imagine how her husband, Marc, and two daughters are coping in the wake of her disappearance. She's shown news clips of Marc, desperately appealing to the public for information on her whereabouts. She tortures herself with visions of her family's devastated new reality. She thinks of what's lost, remembering the beginnings of her romance with Marc and the beautiful family they built together. Marc's pain is visceral. He thinks of nothing but his wife. He shifts from utter despair to frantic action, and when the police discover Alexandra's bloody belongings by the river, turning their missing-persons case into a murder investigation, he cannot accept that she is lost to him. He embarks on his own journey, through the dark maze of the art world that so gripped his wife, following a trail that leads him to find answers to questions he never meant to ask.

This was an interesting story, its told from Alex's point of view which adds a unique depth to the story as much of it is seen from Marc's view but it's her telling the story. The plot is complex and builds to an interesting showdown but I wanted to know more about what happened to Marc and his girls after everything. The story has some interesting twists, I figured out the main one as the story developed. #Netgalley 3*

Very cleverly written, will keep you guessing until the end. Once I finished and thought about it - the author did leave clues in the text you just had to realise that at the time.

Wow! I‘m pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying this book. Most of the thrillers I‘ve read recently had me skipping pages just to get to the end. But this book was different. I actually found myself SLOWING down as I neared the last 20 or so pages. And even though I ‘kinda‘ figured this book out, I found the ending to be original and quite the surprise. I didn‘t see that coming! If you like your thrillers smart you‘ll ❤️ this 📖!

Paced like Sometimes I Lie and told through a speculative voice, ghost-like almost in the vein of Lovely Bones, Alexandra narrates in 1st person how she assumes her husband Marc tries to cope with her disappearance. Interspersed with snippets of their early relationship, this story is dark and leaves the reader questioning the line between life & fiction. The aspects of Alex‘s artistic endeavors are relatable to me & my BFA. Slow, but liked it.

Ok, so this book was boring for the first 90 pages. But...now that I‘m past that, I actually love this. It‘s making me wonder a lot of things, not just about the plot, but as a creative woman who wants conventional life-moments, but who is also very opposed to convention. If you read this, stick with it. Even if you give up, it succeeds in posing interesting questions about life, expectations, art, expression...hated it at first, love it now.

The titular Alexandra certainly exemplifies the 🤹🏻‍♂️ as she tackles her roles as mother, wife, teacher and artist. The book hooks you in with her disappearance and manages an interesting balance of past and imagined present. The ending fell a bit short for me, but I think it will lead to lively conversation! #EmojiMadness @JoeStalksBeck @Tiffy_Reads

I‘m torn on this one. It‘s well written, but waaaaaay too much like GONE GIRL for my taste. The ending was fairly predictable (even I figured it out and I suck at twist endings) but the final two pages of the epilogue were so 👌🏽

I‘m going with a solid 3.5 / 5—completely saved by the epilogue.

A late night UPS delivery brought me more #bookmail. 🙌🏻 I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway, but I haven't heard anything about it (especially since it doesn't release until March 2018). The blurb on the back does give me some Gone-Girl vibes, so it could be an interesting read. #TBR
