Dreaming in Cuban (Turtleback School & Library)
Dreaming in Cuban (Turtleback School & Library) | Cristina García
23 posts | 33 read | 47 to read
A vivid and funny first novel about three generations of a Cuban family divided by conflicting loyalties over the Cuban revolution, set in the world of Havana in the 1970s and '80s and in an emigre neighborhood of Brooklyn. It is a story of immense charm about women and politics, women and witchcraft, women and their men.

This was an interesting read. Hard to describe, and sometimes very strange but very entertaining. Even though it's written in English there were a lot of Spanish words throughout, and I learned a bit about Cuba. One of my favorite quotes "Painting is its own language...translations just confuse it, dilute it, like words going from Spanish to English. I envy my mother her Spanish curses sometimes. They make my English collapse in a heap."

Some belated birthday gifts from a couple of friends who know me well 🤗 I've read Their Eyes were Watching God before, but I didn't own this beautiful version 😠and I've never even heard of Dreaming in Cuban but I'm all about everything Spanish these days so it's right up my alley! 🇨🇺

I love this book told in magic realism style. "I imagine Abulea Celias surprise as I sneak up behind her . She'll be sitting in her wicker swing overlooking the sea and she'll smell of salt and violet water. There'll be gulls and crabs along the shore . She'll stroke my cheek with her cool hands and sing quietly in my ear." I think of my daughters when I read it, who are Cuban on their grandfather's side. #dreamingincuban #latinheritagemonth

Half way through the book I realized I was skipping parts trying to get to the action... which I never found. It's not that it's a bad bood, I believe maybe I wasn't in the mood for that type of novel so my review might not be totally fair. However, I was excited to find a novel set in Cuba.

ââââ Magical realism that I truly enjoyed!! Novel set in Cuba and New York about the women of a family split after the revolution, it moves through different perspectives and different times.

📚I'd say The Read Aloud Family exploded my TBR but I own this book, so when my littles are older I can just go back to it for recommendations!

📚 Finally getting to Dreaming in Cuban, I've been wanting to get to this one for the better part of the year! 😄

I‘m currently working on overhauling the design of my website (so many posts to reformat!), and I‘ve been taking some snapshots of my shelves to sprinkle around the design. This shelf is the tail end of my travel writing books and the start of my books set in the Caribbean and Central and South America. I sort most of my books by setting, then author and topic. How do you arrange your books?

#bookshelves #paperbacks #bookspines #booklife

Jennick2004 Oh my goodness that would take ages...and if you haven‘t read them how do you know? Lol...mine are just a mess 🤣 6y
readtheworld @Jennick2004 I keep all my unread books separate from my read ones, so that works out fine for sorting them. The unread ones aren‘t really sorted at all, just stuck on the top of a shelf. 🙃 6y
Jennick2004 Aah that makes so much more sense 🤣 I don‘t keep many of the books I‘ve already read! 6y
minkyb At this point in my life I try to only hold on to books I have not read and then gift them once I‘ve finished. Alphabetically is the easiest for me but when you run out of room all hell breaks loose 😂 6y

Intensely rhythmic and lyrical, this novel describes the responses and lives of three generations of women during and after the Cuban revolution. Each woman has a different outlook on the revolution which affects their relationships, both familial and romantic. Historical fiction with a tinge of magical realism.
