Icebreaker
Icebreaker: A Voyage Far North | Horatio Clare
6 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
'We are celebrating a hundred years since independence this year: how would you like to travel on a government icebreaker?' A message from the Finnish embassy launches Horatio Clare on a voyage around an extraordinary country and an unearthly place, the frozen Bay of Bothnia, just short of the Arctic circle. Travelling with the crew of Icebreaker Otso, Horatio, whose last adventure saw him embedded on Maersk container vessels for the bestseller Down to the Sea in Ships, discovers stories of Finland, of her mariners and of ice. Finland is an enigmatic place, famous for its educational miracle, healthcare and gender equality as well as Nokia, Angry Birds, saunas, questionable cuisine and deep taciturnity. Aboard Otso Horatio gets to know the men who make up her crew, and explores Finlands history and character. Surrounded by the extraordinary colours and conditions of a frozen sea, he also comes to understand something of the complexity and fragile beauty of ice, a near-miraculous substance which cools the planet, gives the stars their twinkle and which may hold all our futures in its crystals.

I'm becoming quite a fan of this chap.
He boards an ice breaker to follow a few days of their work, along the Finnish coast.
Comments on climate change and politics are important, and the history included with Russia and Sweden rulings was very new to me.

Finally got a chance to read this book that @Oryx got me the birthday before last 😂
The pacing was a little uneven for me, but I loved learning about icebreakers and Finland! Very cool!
Never would have thought to pick this for myself and I‘m so glad I read it.

Oryx It can take me years to get to books too 😁 you just have to wait for the moment when it asks to be read. 4y

Thank you for the birthday book @Oryx ! My husband has already stolen it, so I guess I‘ll read it when he gives it back 🤷🏻‍♀️ Luckily, he‘s a fast reader!

Oryx It's a good read - I hope he enjoys it (and you, eventuality!) 5y

This was for my local library‘s reading challenge, under the heading “not my bag”. It was a teeny bit of a cheat, because I saw that it‘s set largely off the coast of Finland, and I was relieved to see that it had a bit of history and social commentary as well (not all boats and ice!). As a teacher, I‘m insanely jealous of Finland‘s education system: free education for all, up to and including PhD, and their Early Years education - wow!

So many books in progress and waiting to be read. So of course I have to buy and start another one. It's a travel book set on an icebreaker in Finland. I can't resist that. Learning so much about Finland. It's definitely high on the list of places to visit.
