I don‘t think I would put this in my class library before I read it first. I am kind of skeptical about the story but am intrigued because it has won the Newberry medal.
so-soThis fantasy book is set in what is supposed to resemble the real world but is nothing close to it. The characters are very well developed and colorful. The whipping boy serves as a way for elders to take out their frustration on the prince without hitting the prince himself.

Having fun reading this for my 5th grade lit circle at school. Get to have them infer for words like: catchpenny rogues, dimwits, trifle, varmints, oafs and chaw.
pickListened to the audiobook. The narrator does an EXCELLENT job with the different voices. Number 81 in my quest to read all the Newbery winners.
pickThis book's stuck with me more than most of my other childhood reads. Jemmy is Prince Brat's whipping boy--whipped for PB's punishments. The two run away together, meeting all kinds of interesting characters. The plot is fairly light and rompous with humorous characters & events, which overlay some very serious themes, particularly empathy, dignity, & prejudice. A Newberry winner! #PairWith: a chocolate milkshake, whipped cream & cherry on top.
