The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes and illustrated by Louis Slobodkin is a Newbery Honor RF Novel. The story is about a girl who claims she has 100 dresses in her closet and her “friends” don‘t believe her and consistently question her and tease her about the 100 dresses. It truly is an amazing story and is well worth the read for anyone looking for a a great lesson about bullying. It would be an awesome SR and IR.

The trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White and illustrated by Edward Frascino is a MF Novel that would make for an awesome AS or LC. The novel tells the story of Louie a Trumpeter Swan who was born without a voice and desperately searched for ways to communicate so he could live a normal Swan life. ESOL: 5. Teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. UDL: 3.1 Activate of supply background knowledge.

The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman illustrated by Peter Sis is a John Newbery Medal HF novel that is a great LC in the classroom! The story is about a prince who never is punished but instead his “whipping boy” gets his punishments. The prince eventually learns his lesson when he becomes the whipping boy. ESOL: 5. Teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts.

The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant and illustrated by Stephen Gammell is a Caldecott Honor RF PB that talks about what life is like when relatives come to stay with you in your house. It would be an awesome IR and RA if you know your students have big families. ESOL: 22 Give enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions.

Don‘t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems is a Caldecott Honor F PB that can be great to help students understand that although you ask something a million times in many different ways is the answer is NO it‘s going to stay NO. Ada Twist Scientist by Andrea Beaty illustrated by David Roberts is a SF picture book. This PB tells the story about Ada Twist who questions everything from the moment she starts talking. Her mind constantly questioning and searching for answers. This book would be a great RA to introduce science topics such as creating a hypothesis.

The book, a Caldecott Honor Award winner, puts a twist on many common fairy tales and always gets a good laugh in! This would be a great RA/ RT/ DR because there are so many different stories to enjoy.

I am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up For Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai is a 2014 Nobel Peace Prize memoir detailing her life as a girl trying to get a real education aside from all the anger and retaliation that happens to her by the rebels. It would be a great book as an I.R. or P.R. because it allows for discussion but also allows for a more intimate understanding of what really was going on for young women today.

This novel follows Ivan, a silverback gorilla who lives in a cage inside a mall for all the shoppers to see. One day he makes a promise to help a baby elephant get out of their cage in the mall and into a zoo. I would love to use this as a R.A in my classroom while combining it with EL strategy 30.
