Farthest North: The Incredible Three-Year Voyage to the Frozen Latitudes of the North
Farthest North: The Incredible Three-Year Voyage to the Frozen Latitudes of the North | Fridjtof Nansen
12 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
In 1893, Fridjtof Nansen set sail in the Fram, a ship specially designed and built to be frozen into the polar ice cap, withstand its crushing pressures, and travel with the sea's drift closer to the North Pole than anyone had ever gone before. Experts said such a ship couldn't be built and that the voyage was tantamount to suicide. This brilliant first-person account, originally published in 1897, marks the beginning of the modern age of exploration. Nansen vividly describes the dangerous voyage and his 15-month-long dash to the North Pole by sledge. Farthest North is an unforgettable tale and a must-read for any armchair explorer.

I finally finished this one. Some of the scenes in the book upset me; but, they are clearly of the time. A good look at making sure your ship is custom for your adventure and being fully prepared.

#ItsALongWayToTheTop (to the top of the world, that is 😆).

This is the 1898, two-volume edition that tells of Nansen‘s three year attempt by ship (and sleigh!) to reach the North Pole.

AlaMich Wait, is this an Arctic/Antarctic, “the ship got stuck in the ice and our frost bitten limbs started falling off” adventure I haven‘t heard of? How could that be? I lurve those!! 😍 6y
LeahBergen @AlaMich Yes! With walrus attacks, too! 😂 6y
AlaMich @LeahBergen Even better!! I haven‘t read a good walrus attack scene in, oh, ever!! 😂 6y

Well, this took a while! This is not only a very detailed journal recording almost each and every day of this journey (which makes you really appreciate how long it was), it‘s also a scientific log book of latitudes, temperatures and dinner compositions! Not to mention endless bear, seal and walrus hunts. It‘s sad about the dogs they had to kill though, especially when you know they actually cared about them.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled In my TBR - soon!! 6y
tricours @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled it‘s a surprisingly jolly read. Nansen must have been the most optimistic man alive and they just handle anything that comes their way in an impressive manner. I don‘t think people like that exist anymore. 6y

Whereas all other explorers are miserable, cold and sick Nansen‘s expedition is seriously just having a good time! It‘ll be so interesting to read about the Scott expedition after this. And I want to go back to the Fram museum in Oslo and walk on board again now that I‘m more familiar with the ship!

Another EXTREMELY uneventful day at work, but at least this book is getting very interesting (after 10% of preparations and arguments regarding arctic currents and whatnot). I definitely have to get a print version of it. @Cinfhen I love the treats you sent! I was going to make Turkish coffee to go with the halva but all oven tops I have access to are induction and my Turkish coffee pot is not magnetic 😔

Cinfhen I'm still getting used to the STRONG Turkish coffee and I'm not a fan of Halva, but I wanted you to experience the full Israeli culinary experience 😉😘 6y
tricours @Cinfhen since I‘m Swedish I‘m used to strong coffee and Turkish is my favorite type! 😀 I like halva, but some types are too dry. This one was very nice! 6y
Cinfhen Yay!!! I'm still bummed about those books!!!! 6y
tricours @Cinfhen haha! For the secret Santa swap I added the direct link to my books-I-own bookshelf on Goodreads, and will continue to do so in the future 😁 6y

I‘ve got a cold that won‘t give up, there‘s nothing to do at work, so why not start a new book about terrible experiences in freezing cold climates?

just bought a kobo aura one. So excited!! Overdrive compatibility and a bigger screen than the glo. #kobo #koboauraone

acorter So, after 3 months what do you think? I've had Kindles for about 7 years now (currently have the voyage) but I am thinking about making the switch to Kobo... 7y
CJEskriett I am a big kobo fan. I've had a Touch, a Glo & the new one. I also have a kindle paperwhite. The kindle frustrates me as battery life is poor compared to kobo. I do think kobo hardware is better (I've never had any problems) &their prices are much better than they used to be. KA1 adaptive lighting not perfected yet 7y
CJEskriett ...prices for books I was meaning there. The overdrive compatibility is not brilliant yet but better than needing to plug into pc and do it that way. 7y
