Markswoman | Rati Mehrotra
An order of magical-knife wielding female assassins brings both peace and chaos to their post-apocalyptic world in this bewitching blend of science fiction and epic fantasythe first entry in a debut duology that displays the inventiveness of the works of Sarah Beth Durst, Marie Lu, and S. J. Kincaid. Kyra is the youngest Markswoman in the Order of Kali, a highly trained sisterhood of elite warriors armed with telepathic blades. Guided by a strict code of conduct, Kyra and the other Orders are sworn to protect the people of Asiana. But to be a Markswoman, an acolyte must repudiate her former life completely. Kyra has pledged to do so, yet she secretly harbors a fierce desire to avenge her dead family. When Kyras beloved mentor dies in mysterious circumstances, and Tamsyn, the powerful, dangerous Mistress of Mental Arts, assumes control of the Order, Kyra is forced on the run. Using one of the strange Transport Hubs that are remnants of Asianas long-lost past, she finds herself in the unforgiving wilderness of desert that is home to the Order of Khur, the only Order composed of men. Among them is Rustan, a young, disillusioned Marksman whom she soon befriends. Kyra is certain that Tamsyn committed murder in a twisted bid for power, but she has no proof. And if she fails to find it, fails in her quest to keep her beloved Order from following Tamsyn down a dark path, it could spell the beginning of the end for Kyraand for Asiana. But what she doesnt realize is that the line between justice and vengeance is razor thin . . . thin as the blade of a knife.

#GenreSwap I finally finished my last book. It‘s one that I would never have chosen to read on my own, but I really enjoyed it. I engaged with the main character Kyra and the story. It was a solid 3 ⭐️s. I wish it didn‘t have a cliffhanger ending though. It‘s heading to the PO tomorrow. @collegecatlady @rjsthumbelina @BurghBookAddict @TheRomantiCate

#GenreSwap @TheRomantiCate @rjsthumbelina @BurghBookAddict I got my book back a few days ago and look forward to reading all of your comments. I apologize for not meeting the deadline to send back this book. I have about 100 pages left. I‘m enjoying this one. 🌹

rjsthumbelina I am working on finishing the drafter still as well! No big deal 😉 6y
TheRomantiCate I really liked Markswoman... I will also apologize, I have The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and I‘ve got a ways to go with it. I‘ve been dealing with losing my job and finding a new one so yeah... but I‘m hoping to finish it this week. 6y
Wife @TheRomantiCate Oh my! I hope all works out for you. 🌹 6y

I really, really liked this! Lady lead, lots of twists and turns, Fantasy in S Asia, a slow simmer to allow for world building was a rollicking boil by the end. I am@looking forward to the next one out in March! Here are just a few of the many cat poses witnessed while reading this book.

🗡Clans of warriors are essentially tribal Buddhists, which was neat.
🗡Straight-forward hero origin story that‘s severely one-dimensional & awkwardly longer than necessary.
🗡Political intrigue is bland seasoning for main plot.
🗡Romance was abrupt, unnatural, & steals focus for the last 1/4th.
🗡Starts strong, ends weak.
🗡Flat characters.
🗡Nothing is truly developed (just floats) making it frustratingly unsatisfying.
🗡Super average.
🗡2.75/5.

Felt very meh about this one. I read it for my book club and honestly wouldn‘t have finished it if it weren‘t for that. That being said I liked the plot and the idea behind the story, but just not how it was carried out. Also the love story was terrible.

Kind of slow in the middle for me but overall I enjoyed it. It will be interesting to see where the series goes. And that cover is gorgeous.🗡

Starting this novel this weekend. It‘s an Indian ya fantasy about clans of sisterhoods who are trained in magic-imbued weaponry & fighting. They‘re tasked to maintain peace, but for one girl, peace isn‘t possible until she gets vengeance on those who murdered her entire family.

Raven wants everyone to know that she is feeling somewhat better, and that she let me finish my pick for the #genreswappbc ! @TheRomantiCate I will be dropping it off at the UPS store tomorrow after work. (Bc sadly, I finished it 10 minutes before my UPS store closes, so I cant get it out by today.) Review to come, and I cant wait for you all to get to read it! @collegecatlady

Sorry, guys! I'm not finished with this book to send it off quite yet. #genreswappbc I would have been done, but yesterday we had a doggy medical emergency. Fortunately I think Raven is on the upswing now, but we went to the emergency vet twice yesterday, and I just didn't have the time (or the presence of mind) to be able to finish it! Sitting down right now to try and finish it up! Here's a pic of Raven to make up for it!

Sace I'm glad Raven in on the mend! 6y
KatieCarpenter Oh no! Hope everything is ok! 6y
rjsthumbelina @KatieCarpenter @RestlessFickleBookHoarder thanks. She had a super upset stomach to the point that she could barely get up and move. Way out of the ordinary for my super energetic, strong and bouncy 1 year old pup. She's not bouncy again yet, still kind of limping and on a bland diet (and has not pooped yet since giving the anti-nausea shot yesterday) but is acting much more like herself today and doesn't seem in pain. So better, but not healed 6y

This book is getting really interesting! I'm excited to have chosen it for #genreswappbc , bc I will get to share it! I still have a little over 100 pages left, and I already had to look up if there will be a series, bc I'm not ready to leave this world.

It's always amazing to me at funerals how the dead person looks nearly unrecognizable from how they looked when living. This quote reminds me of that - she talks about how the persons strong aura is gone. In death, everyone looks the same.

I just realized that the blurb for this book spoils something that hasn't even happened yet, and I'm 75 pages in! That bothers me 😑 I'm so irritated! Publishers should know better than to put spoilers in blurbs for books - if you are good enough at your job, you can make people want to read the book without revealing a major plot twist! #genreswappbc

All the makings of a great day off: sitting on my loveseat reading a fantasy novel and looking out the window at the pretty sky from inside the air conditioned house, with nearly all the pets in my lap and lunch on the windowsill 🧝❤️

Taking some quiet moments at the family gathering to read a bit for the #genreswappbc ! I'm really enjoying this one so far. Nice world building, and the author has a way of introducing conflict in a sneaky way, so that you'll miss it if you're not looking out for it!

I just realized I haven‘t posted in two weeks but instead just kind of lurked around 😄 so, it‘s time to get back on track. This debut novel has a strong female lead with a sentient blade. It‘s about revenge and duty. While this is great source material for something I‘d love, it didn‘t grip me completely, probably because of the unnecessary love triangle involved. Also, it‘s my first book of #mounttbrreadathon

BibliophileMomma Yay! Finished your first book! 🤘🏼 7y

A bit of a slow start for me trying to figure out the world building. But, once I was in, I really enjoyed it. But, I wish I hadn‘t read this until book 2 was out since the ending was scream worthy.

Markswoman is very much a debut novel. It does some interesting things with its world-building, pushing back against racist & sexist stereotypes. However, it suffers from some pacing issues.
