Veil
Veil | Chloe Neill
A brand new series from "New York Times" bestselling author Chloe Neill. "Seven years ago, the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil's Isle." Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused. Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack in full view of the French Quarter Liam decides to bring her to Devil s Isle and the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn t the same as keeping her out of his head. As more and more Sensitives fall prey to their magic, and unleash their hunger on the city, Claire and Liam must work together to save New Orleans, or else the city will burn "

I wanted to like this more than I did. Some grammatical errors (it‘s toe the line, not tow the line) and a couple of misattributed quotes bothered me, but overall the world building is pretty good. I might continue the series eventually, or I might not. I‘m not dying to do so, and I have other things calling my name at the moment. Meh.

Danny says I‘ve spent too much time reading today. This is his next napping spot, thank you very much.

@julesG I guess it‘s just that kind of day.

Reggie This reminds me of the Hobbit and the dragon guarding the treasure. Cute pic. 4y

#top20series #20series20days Day 6

Devil‘s Isle series by Chloe Neill

While I mostly liked her Chicagoland Vampire series (more the earlier books than the later ones), I really loved Devil‘s Isle. The world, the magic system, and of course, the MC, Claire Connolly.

There are 4 books now. And what #20series20days is showing me is that I am going to have to order some books! 😂

Andrew65 Looks good. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I've been thinking the same thing... time to fill in some of these series-blanks! 😂 4y

Books are seriously getting me through this week. My jaw and head have been hurting since last night, and then the news this morning. As a survivor of suicide loss, I don't do so well with hearing news of more suicides. But it's definitely something we have to talk about along with mental illness in general.

cobwebmoth I hope your head and jaw feel better soon. 7y

mcipher I‘m glad it‘s not just me. I feel like I shouldn‘t be so bothered 20+ years later, but it‘s still a gut punch every time. Hope you feel better soon!! 7y

I listened to the audiobook, and wish I'd gotten it from the library instead of Audible. This is a solid 3🌟 urban fantasy set in New Orleans after a war between humans and magical creatures beyond the veil. Our heroine is Claire, and she's just learning she has magic (which is a crime now). She gets embroiled in saving the world. See? It's a bit formulaic.

Listening to a new series from the author of one of my favorite vampire series. So far, I like it. But why do so many female characters have green eyes? It's way more than the true genetic 20%. #greeneyedgirl #listenanddochores

Zelma Because they're special snowflakes. 😋 8y
readinginthedark I think a lot of fantasy authors do that to try and make their characters stand out. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Zelma I'm green eyed so I especially like your comment. ❄️❄️ 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @readinginthedark I suppose. But if this many authors do it, then it's certainly not original. 🕶 8y
