A non-fiction book about life with cows on an English fram. I didn't especially care for the anecdotal style and seemingly random organization of the author's thoughts, but the stories were charming and made me think back fondly to my visit to the Cotswolds last year.

I have always loved cows but I have never thought about them this much.
This woman is dedicated to all farm animals which in a way is amazing but very odd.

Hens enjoy human company & our hens hate to be left out of apparently interesting conversations. We had a large group of French agricultural students here & they had gathered in a ring to learn about crop rotation. The hens pushed into the centre of the melee. They stretched up to make themselves as tall & noticeable as possible & tried to take part in the conversation the only way they know, by singing loudly.

“The seemingly mundane day-to-day existence of a cow or a calf is perhaps not a subject that would capture everyone‘s imagination,” states Cotswold farmer Rosamund Young in her introduction. If, like me, you are curious about the surprising things cows get up to when allowed a lot of freedom, this quiet, meandering collection of anecdotes is perfect. Some anthropomorphism, some lovely asides about other farm inhabitants, much tenderness. 🐄

As calves get older and genuinely need to spend most of the day eating, they develop a routine for games at dusk. This is the time of night when we have seen calves playing tag with a fox, chasing pheasants, and organising heats in race-me-to-your-mother-and-back with the eventual winner leading a lap of honour round the perimeter of the field.

In the house we label the milk jugs with the cows‘ names and we all have our particular preferences.

A little dry, but she really loves her cows!

2. It's a book about the lives and personalities of cows, how they form friendships, have hobbies and play games and so much else. It's really quite absorbing!🐄
