The Moth
The Moth | Catherine Burns
For the first time in print, celebrated storytelling phenomenon The Moth presents fifty spellbinding, soul-bearing stories selected from their extensive archive (fifteen-plus years and 10,000-plus stories strong). Inspired by friends telling stories on a porch, The Moth was born in small-town Georgia, garnered a cult following in New York City, and then rose to national acclaim with the wildly popular podcast and Peabody Award-winning weekly public radio show The Moth Radio Hour. Stories include: writer Malcolm Gladwell's wedding toast gone horribly awry; legendary rapper Darryl "DMC" McDaniels' obsession with a Sarah McLachlan song; poker champion Annie Duke's two-million-dollar hand; and A. E. Hotchner's death-defying stint in a bullring . . . with his friend Ernest Hemingway. Read about the panic of former Clinton Press Secretary Joe Lockhart when he misses Air Force One after a hard night of drinking in Moscow, and Dr. George Lombardi's fight to save Mother Teresa's life. This will be a beloved read for existing Moth enthusiasts, fans of the featured storytellers, and all who savor well-told, hilarious, and heartbreaking stories.

You guys, I have a confession to make. I‘ve been so stressed and depressed by COVID-19 et al. that I HAVEN‘T BEEN ABLE TO READ. We‘re kindred spirits. We‘ve waited our lives for something like this: days with Nothing. To. Do. But. Read! And I can‘t! So after nearly two months, I finally stumbled through these brief testimonials. But if any of you are feeling the same, or if any of you know of some books to welcome me back, I‘d be forever grateful.

Centique I spent a few weeks like this so I thoroughly sympathise! What worked for me were books with really stable settings and lots of interesting characters - low on plot, high on setting. But I know other people have found they need plot - thrillers, or something light and happy like a romance. What sounds right for you? 4y
peacegypsy @Centique Thank you for your kind words. Fortunately, my TBR stack is very healthy, so I‘ll just keep trying to find a fit. It just gave me such comfort to know another has found herself in the same place. Thank you! 4y
Suet624 I‘m sorry. I know it‘s been hard. I‘ve been finding books to dip into that offer essays on hope, love or kindness. Sometimes that can ground me enough to take a deep breath and settle into a different book. 4y
BarbaraBB You‘re not alone. I have discovered I really like classic feel good novels at the moment. Nothing to hard. I can recommend 4y
peacegypsy @BarbaraBB Thanks for this suggestion! 🌸 4y

Read these Moth books (there are three of them). And then buy copies for every reader in your life, because it is impossible to not enjoy them.

Excellent! Not one uninteresting story. @Kelican17 and I went to a live performance a couple years ago. If there is a show in your area, I highly recommend that you check it out. I bought this for bedtime reading since the stories are only 4-5 pages long, but I ended up binge reading! My favorite story is about Mother Teresa‘s doctor. I‘m going to seek out other Moth collections. 4.5/5🎤s

Kelican17 @Wife i‘ve never read The Moth stories. Compare them to listening to them live/on the radio. Still as good? I feel like it would be missing the emotions of the storytellers. 5y
Wife @Kelican17 I think listening would be a better experience and I think you could search NPR for the stories. I like that the best are collected in one place. Were you the one that told me about the story of the home health aide that took care of a KKK member? That one is in this book. I‘ll send it to you Sassafras Express to see what you think. 5y
Kelican17 @Wife yes, that was me. There was also a story about some high ranking, tough guy military dude and his young son playing golf. I had to pull over to the side of the road because i was laughing too hard and couldn‘t see to drive. 😂😋 5y

Now I‘m a bit sad because I‘ve finished all three Moth collections. This one is great! I read it over a longer time span than the others, and both ways work. If you want a book you can read for five minutes, finish an essay, and do something else, this is fantastic.

The stories themselves are amazing. They run the gamut of humanity, and I found a lot of them very uplifting.

This was a reread for me since it was chosen for my other book club at my recommendation. This was really great, and I‘m so glad I reread it. The stories are quick, funny, sad, interesting and surprising. Definitely a must read.#litsyAtoZ @BookishMarginalia

I live near a retirement community full of readers. Every few months, they have a book sale. This is my #bookhaul from this week‘s sale. $10.50 for all of them. Not the cheapest, but still pretty inexpensive.

GatheringBooks nice haul! and that is still pretty cheap! 2 dollars per book! :) 5y

I love good storytelling and these pieces are all spectacular in their own ways. It‘s like a collection of short stories. These are all stories that were told live and then later transcribed. I‘ve only listened to the Moth podcast a few times. I‘ll have to check it out again because the storytelling in these pieces is really phenomenal.

This book has gone straight to my (very small) favourites shelf. A collection of 50 true stories told at The Moth story-telling nights around USA, they are all different but all so moving and will reaffirm your faith in humanity. It's now on my bucket list to attend one of these events in the flesh. An easy 5 stars!
