THREE DECADES.TWO MURDERS.ONE CONSPIRACY. WHO IS AGENT 6? Tom Rob Smith's debut, Child 44, was an immediate publishing sensation and marked the arrival of a major new talent in contemporary fiction. Named one of top 100 thrillers of all time by NPR, it hit bestseller lists around the world, won the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award and the ITW Thriller Award for Best First Novel, and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. In this spellbinding new novel, Tom Rob Smith probes the tenuous border between love and obsession as Leo Demidov struggles to untangle the threads of a devastating conspiracy that shatters everything he holds dear. Deftly capturing the claustrophobic intensity of the Cold War-era Soviet Union, it's at once a heart-pounding thriller and a richly atmospheric novel of extraordinary depth.... AGENT 6 Leo Demidov is no longer a member of Moscow's secret police. But when his wife, Raisa, and daughters Zoya and Elena are invited on a "Peace Tour" to New York City, he is immediately suspicious. Forbidden to travel with his family and trapped on the other side of the world, Leo watches helplessly as events in New York unfold and those closest to his heart are pulled into a web of political conspiracy and betrayal-one that will end in tragedy. In the horrible aftermath, Leo demands only one thing: to investigate the killer who destroyed his family. His request is summarily denied. Crippled by grief and haunted by the need to find out exactly what happened on that night in New York, Leo takes matters into his own hands. It is a quest that will span decades, and take Leo around the world--from Moscow, to the mountains of Soviet-controlled Afghanistan, to the backstreets of New York--in pursuit of the one man who knows the truth: Agent 6.

Oh, Leo Demidov, you brave, brave man.

I‘ve now spent many hundreds of pages with this complex character and as I finish this trilogy I feel I am saying goodbye to an old friend.

“What were you sick with?”

“Sometimes a person can be sick from giving up. They‘re not suffering from a disease. They have no sense of purpose, or direction, despair can make a person sick.”

Bambolina_81 I really enjoyed this series, they're so atmospheric 6y
Libby1 @Bambolina_81 - they really are. I found the scope of the series to be very ambitious, too. 6y

“She would not be defined by rage and anger. She would be motivated by hope, idealism, and she was not afraid to make a stand. Yes, the repercussions were that she was alone and unloved. Better to be isolated than to compromise her beliefs, striving for acceptance from those she did not respect. There was no value in love that was dependent upon pretence. For as long as she could remember she‘d been someone who did the right thing...” 👇🏻

“Jesse wondered about the other men and women he might have known and loved if their careers hadn‘t been swallowed up by a disapproving state. How many artists, musicians, writers, painters had been lost to fear? He wished he could bring them together, these lost souls, sit them round his table, pour them a drink, hear their stories, listen to their troubles and delight in their talents.”

No_One Yes, nice nail polish! What is that brand/colour? Please? 🙂 6y
Libby1 Thanks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and @No_One ! It‘s called Damson Dream and it‘s from a brand called No7 from Boots, a UK shop. I don‘t know if they still make it as I bought it a few years ago! 6y
No_One @Libby1 oh thank you!! We do carry some Boots products at our Canadian drug store chain ‘Shoppers Drug Mart‘. I‘ll check. I‘m old enough to remember when Boots was our drug store here in Canada. 😀 6y

@RealLifeReading

I was surprised by how few LGBTQ+ Authors I could quickly find on my shelves. I should do something about that!
