The Spring Girls
The Spring Girls: A Modern-Day Retelling of Little Women | Anna Todd
Four sisters desperately seeking the blueprints to lifethe modern-day retelling of Louisa May Alcotts Little Women like only Anna Todd (After, Imagines) could do. The Spring GirlsMeg, Jo, Beth, and Amyare a force of nature on the New Orleans military base where they live. As different as they are, with their father on tour in Iraq and their mother hiding something, their fears are very much the same. Struggling to build lives they can be proud of and that will lift them out of their humble station in life, one year will determine all that their futures can become. The oldest, Meg, will be an officers wife and enter military society like so many of the women she admires. If her passionand her reputationdont derail her. Beth, the workhorse of the family, is afraid to leave the house, is afraid shell never figure out who she really is. Jo just wants out. Wishing she could skip to graduation, she dreams of a life in New York City and a career in journalism where she can impact the world. Nothing can stop hernot even love. And Amy, the youngest, is watching all her sisters, learning from how they handle themselves. For better or worse. With plenty of sass, romance, and drama, The Spring Girls revisits Louisa May Alcotts classic Little Women, and brings its themes of love, war, class, adolescence, and family into the language of the twenty-first century.

The only thing pretty about this book is the cover. It‘s not a clever retelling of Little Women. Only thing similar is the names otherwise the girls are almost unlikeable. I‘ve picked up and put down this book for months. Had to force myself to finish it. Seriously don‘t know what I didn‘t just bail. #readingchallenge2022

Itchyfeetreader This could have been my word for word review - why did I not just bail! 3y
KristiAhlers @Itchyfeetreader right? Ugh. Lesson learned. 3y

I wish I'd bailed on this. As a retelling I think this was bad. While the girls have the same names their characters and actions are so different that I couldn't see any of the original in this. I started to enjoy it as a story of it's own but it was so bleak and depressing that it was a struggle. Finally it just.. stopped.Everyone's storylines and concerns laid out but left completely up in the air. I was quite disappointed.

Why did I do this to myself? For me this was an absolute pan. The characters had none of the lightness or charm of the original and the relationships between the girls was almost none existent. As a stand alone contemporary It was poor, having been a military wife the opportunity to explore that impact on family life was missed or made trite. Genuinely can‘t believe I finished it

5. It has the word spring in it, I haven't actually read (nor do I own) this yet so I'm not sure.

Pickpick

I‘ve never really read little women just a revision of the books for the individual girls. This is a good retelling if a classic story. I‘m a sucker for modern retellings and this is a another good one to add to the list. It really gets into the rat race of life. Although some of the storylines left me confused it was a solid 4 Star. It does have a slow start.

doodlebug55 I loved Little Women! Great review, will check this out! 7y
Mowen036 @doodlebug050 the author does leave it open for a possible sequel. 7y

I‘m one of those ppl who likes contemporary retellings of classics. This is a reimagining of Little Women. Frankly, if I didn‘t have to listen to it for a freelance assignment I would have bailed early. 🎧 Decent (not stellar) performances couldn‘t save this novel. I hate to pan it, but there was no charm here.

Lacythebookworm Eek. Pretty cover, though! 7y
BethFishReads @Lacythebookworm love the cover, 7y
DebinHawaii Bummer! Love the idea and the cover. ☹️ 7y
BethFishReads @DebinHawaii totally disappointing 7y

1. Cool book swag
2. Parenthood (yes, I‘m out of it)
3. The Spring Girls — I‘m reserving judgment. Audiobook is good but I‘m not yet sure of book itself (I‘m on chapter 2)
4. Snow
5. No tattoos and only a single piercing in each ear.

#5 for 2018
If you want to read this because you like the 'After' series you will be disappointed.
Ok read but wouldn't recommend it.

"Having four daughters aged twelve to nineteen was not only the hardest job I'd ever worked, but would be the most important thing I would ever do. My legacy wasn't going to be that I was an army wife; it would be that I raised four reliable, responsible and capable little women to unleash out into the world."
