Two real-life female pirates were the basis for this and oh how I wanted to love it because of Pirates! Female pirates! LGBTQ romance! Empowered females! But alas I struggled and wanted to DNF it so many times but I persisted and am just glad to mark it read.
Thanks, #netgalley for this #arc.
There wasn‘t as much pirating in Mary Reade as I was expecting, but that didn‘t detract from the story for me.
Mary‘s mother forced her to pretend to be her dead brother, Mark, in order to get his inheritance from her rich grandmother. She lived most of her life as a boy, even her best mate didn‘t know.
I loved this queer coming of age story. It brought me back to the confusion, tension, and angst of figuring out where I fit in and who I am.
I‘m a few chapters in, and I‘ll probably read the whole story today. YA lesbian pirate romance? How could you resist?
Couldn‘t resist one more photo from the signing at one of my favorite bookstores!
Mini bookhaul from Malaprops in Asheville NC last night! It was wonderful to attend my friend Miriam‘s book release party! I was one of the first in line for her very first book signing 😊
I‘ve been anxious to get my hands on Starless too, as I‘ve heard it‘s just as good as her early Kushiel books!
The Pineda is a free ARC I received for spending $$$- most of my haul not pictured because it‘s for gifts 🎁 I‘ve got some wrapping to do 💜
My friend Miriam‘s book comes out soon, and she‘s having her book release party at Malaprop‘s in Asheville NC! I‘m so proud of her, and I can‘t wait to read my own signed copy!!!

This wasn't quite the queer lady pirate adventure I was hoping for. Less adventure and more homophobia / sexism than I expected, and the relationship between Mary and Anne was never really fleshed out or developed enough. An enjoyable enough read but I feel like it could've been so much more.
This has been on my TBR since I first heard about it last fall, and now it's available for download on netgalley? Don't mind if I do!
My friend Miriam‘s book comes out in March, and it‘s making all the lists! B&N has it on their most anticipated list too!
I‘ve preordered it and I can‘t wait to read it!
