A Fine Imitation
A Fine Imitation: A Novel | Amber Brock
15 posts | 17 read | 25 to read
Set in the glamorous 1920s, A Fine Imitation is an intoxicating debut that sweeps readers into a privileged Manhattan socialite's restless life and the affair with a mysterious painter that upends her world, flashing back to her years at Vassar and the friendship that brought her to the brink of ruin. Vera Bellington has beauty, pedigree, and a penthouse at The Angelus--the most coveted address on Park Avenue. But behind the sparkling social whirl, Vera is living a life of quiet desperation. Her days are an unbroken loop of empty, champagne-soaked socializing, while her nights are silent and cold, spent waiting alone in her cavernous apartment for a husband who seldom comes home. Then Emil Hallan arrives at The Angelus to paint a mural above its glittering subterranean pool. The handsome French artist moves into the building, shrouds his work in secrecy, and piques Vera's curiosity, especially when the painter keeps dodging questions about his past. Is he the man he claims to be? Even as she finds herself increasingly drawn to Hallan's warmth and passion, Vera can't suppress her suspicions. After all, she has plenty of secrets, too--and some of them involve art forgers like her bold, artistically talented former friend, Bea, who years ago, at Vassar, brought Vera to the brink of catastrophe and social exile. When the dangerous mysteries of Emil's past are revealed, Vera faces an impossible choice--whether to cling to her familiar world of privilege and propriety or to risk her future with the enigmatic man who has taken her heart. A Fine Imitation explores what happens when we realize that the life we've always led is not the life we want to have. From the Hardcover edition.

This is an interesting read of finding one self through love and discovery through art.

#BookTubeathon is going very well for me. This is the 3rd book I've finished in 3 days. It's quite nice when you have a lot of free time during a week-long readathon. I started this book this morning about 4 am when I woke up too early and just finished it around 9 pm. Not bad for a 300-page book. Haven't decided what I will pick up tomorrow.

Librariana I am "low-key" participating ? I didn't start in earnest until yesterday, tho. I'm hoping to finish one book tonight (hopefully! ?) and another tomorrow. You're doing *amazing*, tho! Can't wait to see what you'll pick next ? 7y
Susanne Awesome job. I'm low-keying it too. I have big goals but will probably only finish two books during #booktubeathon. 7y
emilyesears @Librariana @Susanne I hope you guys did great with Booktubeathon!! I‘ve been a bad Litsian by never replying to comments. Trying to make up for it! 6y

I can be difficult taking an authors picture when they are talking, but here is a pic of Amber Brock discussing her book and offering tips to aspiring authors. This is my second author signing this year that was hosted by my library. I love them! Gwinnett County Library.

RadicalReader @Bookladylinda absolutely wonderful to enjoy and have memorable experiences because of their presence but so hard to get photos when people move so much 7y
Bookladylinda @RadicalReader I like getting to know authors in person, another way to connect with them. 7y

Bookladylinda @RadicalReader - I've gotten a chance to see Harlan Coben twice, he is very selective on where he goes but he has a good friend who lives here in Georgia and he comes here because of him. 7y
RadicalReader @Bookladylinda he's my favorite author too didn't know that was why he would visit a location because of a friend. He is an incredible writer already completed one of his books 7y
Bookladylinda @RadicalReader I don't think that is the criteria for his other appearances but that was one of the reasons he has come to Georgia. And yes he is a fabulous author! 7y
RadicalReader @Bookladylinda what is your favorite Harlan Coben novel? 7y

Today's #ReadJanuary selection for #dressesonthecover. It is also my selection for F in #LitsyAtoZ. It also fulfills the #debutnovel category for #ReadHarder, although I'm reading something else for that. To top it off, it's just plain beautiful. I mean really.

This book was a struggle for me initially, primarily because of the way it is written. The author jumps back and forth between 1913, when the main character Eva Longacre is attending Vassar, and 1923 when she has since left college and is married to a very wealthy man. Once I picked the book back up, I finished it within about two hours. A tale of love, friendship, loneliness, privilege and freedom, this book turned out to be a wonderful read.

Vera Bellington lives a life of wealth but with constraints. A Fine Imitation by Amber Brock is her story in a world of art and the 1920s. This book is Vera's story and remains true to the narrow focus. A static main character? Yes. Predictable? Yes. Entertaining? Yes. Memorable? Probably not.

This was an enjoyable, quick read which alternates chapters from the point of view of the main character, Vera, during her time at Vassar in the 1910's and the book's present, the 1920's NYC. There were a few obvious plot turns and some labored storytelling to tie the two settings. Overall thumbs up

My local independent bookstore, Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Cincinnati, was giving away advance readers editions of soon-to-be released titles today as a part of their Independent Bookstore Day celebrations. I received "A Fine Imitation" by Amber Brock. Can't wait to read it! Love the cover, too?

Gulfsidemusing Such a pretty cover! 8y
