Journey to the West, Volume 1
Journey to the West, Volume 1 | Anthony C Yu
10 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
First published in 1952, "The Journey to the West," volume I, comprises the first twenty-five chapters of Anthony C. Yu's four-volume translation of "Hsi-yu Chi," one of the most beloved classics of Chinese literature. The fantastic tale recounts the sixteen-year pilgrimage of the monk Hsuan-tsang (596-664), one of China's most illustrious religious heroes, who journeyed to India with four animal disciples in quest of Buddhist scriptures. For nearly a thousand years, his exploits were celebrated and embellished in various accounts, culminating in the hundred-chapter" Journey to the West," which combines religious allegory with romance, fantasy, humor, and satire."

I ... did not expect this book to begin with a creation myth. I mean, that‘s definitely the most beginningy beginning I can think of, so it makes a certain kind of sense...

Reading the ginormous introduction to this book already had me primed to expect the unexpected, and still it surprises me. 😆

So ... I just made it to the end of the introduction, 20% of the way into the book. The intro alone is almost as long as the book I finished reading last night. 😆

Those who are familiar with Asian literature will know that this book is one of the 'four great classic novels' of Chinese literature (Romance of the Three Kingdoms being more popular). Published during the Ming Dynasty, it tells of a 17-year #journey of the legendary pilgrimage of a Buddhist monk to Central Asia and India in search of some sacred texts, blending factual story with 'fantastical elements of classic Chinese mythology'. #jubilantjuly

This will be a birthday present to the spouse next month. The unabridged Journey to the West in four revised volumes, Anthony C. Yu translation.
I hope my Monkey fan likes it. He might have been happier with the abridged one volume version, but I just couldn't help myself! 😆

This is from an abridgment called The Monkey and the Monk by the same translator, Anthony Yu. Love this quote. The Monkey King knew how to live.
