Enjoying this observation for many reasons. These are great fun, by the way. I recommend if you enjoy Sherlockian stuff.

A Song for Quiet | Cassandra Khaw

Pickpick

Horror and music and sharp prose plus something apocalyptic growing in the brain meats of Deacon Jones...an entertaining novella that, I learn, is the second one set in this world. No trouble starting with this one, however; I suspect the world is consistent from book to book, but not the characters (perhaps). First is HAMMERS ON BONE, which I'll be seeking out shortly. This is a happy discovery.

Martians Abroad | Carrie Vaughn

I love sci-fi set in our own solar system because I can believe we'll be puttering around in it someday. This is brand new from Carrie Vaughn, out today, about a couple of Martian kids sent to boarding school on Earth. Shenanigans ensue.

BarracudaB Well written view of the mix of teenage angst and independence acquired growing up in a Mars colony. 3y

Excited to begin this in earnest; I discovered it by browsing B&N yesterday and read just the first few pages. The voice was amusing so I snagged it. I expect there will be shenanigans.

Holy crap I found this last night at the bookstore while looking for something else--the sequel to WALK THE EARTH A STRANGER! During the gold rush days, Lee Westfall can sense the gold beneath her feet--and her murderous uncle wants to control her because of it. First book was so good, which means I simply have to find out what happens next. And what better way to enjoy a book about gold than with a glass of liquid gold...?

Deeply chewy book on which entire college courses have been taught. I've always been fascinated by his exploration of what Quality is, an ill-defined concept that we nevertheless can identify when presented with options to judge: this has quality, that doesn't. The way he turned it around on his students here (for a while) also amused me.

anthonystclair Read this when I got my sidecar motorcycle in 2008. Quality likely factored in greatly with all my life decisions since then. 3y

Eeeeee so excited! I got this early at DragonCon but I have waited to read it until this week when it comes out so I can squee with everyone else! The sequel to UPDRAFT, I can take wing again into this unique "sky-fi" world that's written so poetically. Check out UPDRAFT if you haven't yet and catch up? It's beautiful stuff.

cmckinnon Very excited to read this one! 3y
JPrecht Just saw the excerpt in TOR twitter last night and remembered that Updraft had been in my list of books to pick up. Clearly I need to move it up the buy list! 3y

Bookshelf Review #12: This is book 2 of the Miriam Black series, which I love so much I bought them in hardcover after reading in paperback originally.

When Miriam touches you, she knows how and when you're going to die. It's made her a bit antisocial. She's vivid, lurid, unforgiving, and over the course of four books and a novella (I got to read book four a bit early), I'm enthralled with her war against her personal demons.

Bookshelf Review #11: One of my favorite heroines is Kate Prospero. She polices the paranormal--alchemists, in fact, who are peddling dirty magic for profit and ruining lives. There are three books in this clever series that combines elements of police procedurals with urban fantasy. Methinks you'll dig it.

Bookshelf Review #10: Hands-down my current favorite sci-fi series. Set in this solar system so the science is plausible, and the future political structure is believable as well. Also an excellent series called THE EXPANSE on the SyFy channel now, you have five books to dig into with more on the way.

And yes, that is a delicious milkshake you see there.

Looks like an interesting UF character: a null, who weakens the powers of other paranormals, and who is in high demand as a result. Werewolves don't have to change on the full moon; vampires can go to the beach and get a tan.

JosephBower It's a good series! Definitely worth the read or listen. 3y

Bookshelf Review #5: This is the first fantasy book I ever read. Turned out I rather liked fantasy after that. It was funny and had some dang big words in there for a kid: I owe a large part of my vocabulary to Mr. Foster's books. And he's still writing them! More than 120 novels now! This book is full of talking animals, by the way. Might have inspired the creation of a certain Irish Wolfhound named Oberon...
