An interesting read, I enjoyed the prose very much, but it felt a bit disjointed to me. I also found the characters interesting, but not really fleshed out enough for me to be really invested in them.

Today‘s author spotlight: Alice Walker! The 75-year-old was born in Eatonton, Georgia. She is part Cherokee. She is the youngest of 8 children to sharecropper parents. She is blind in her right eye due to a childhood BB gun accident. At Spelman College, she studied under Howard Zinn. In 1967, her and her husband, whom she later divorced, were the first legally married interracial couple in Mississippi. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Meridian's struggle is a universal struggle. Such a beautiful, bleak book.

How could I not choose this as a Pick? Such a rich story with themes as relevant today as they were when first published over 40 years ago. Meridian chose Voter enrollment as a primary weapon against social injustice. This is still a cause that needs support. While it's easy to fall into the mindset that "my vote doesn't count," it's important to recognize that entire demographics are under-represented when this belief is widely held.

So much truth coming out of this powerful novel.

"That the country was owned by the rich and that the rich must be relieved of this ownership before "Freedom" meant anything was something so basic to their understanding of America they felt naïve even discussing it."
Meridian was published in 1976.

I recently added some shelf space and am finally unpacking boxes of books that haven't seen the light of day in ages. I was excited to find this tome containing works by Alice Walker. Immediately started reading Meridian. #readblackwomen #celebrateblackwomen 💕

Ticked off two of my last few squares with this (classic by author of colour and character of colour goes on a spiritual journey) and thought it was really good too. Not an easy read or an enjoyable one, but a thought provoking and challenging one. But what else do you expect from Alice Walker?

This is today‘s train book as I try and tick off my last few #readharder squares. I made such a good start to this challenge at the start of the year, but let it slip away so I‘m in a race at the end.

Quick little read about Meridian's experience working in the Civil Rights Movement and figuring out what being a woman is all about.

It's hard to categorize this book. It is about one person and about every person. It is about the civil rights movement of the sixties and about human rights of every age. It is any easy read and a hard read with a somewhat ambiguous ending. If you like Alice Walker, you will like this book. #readathon #springcleaningreadathon #litsybingo
