Never cut the drugs--leave them pure. Guns are meant to be shot--keep them loaded. Family is everything--betray them and die. Harley McKenna is the only child of North County's biggest criminal. Duke McKenna's run more guns, cooked more meth, and killed more men than anyone around. Harley's been working for him since she was sixteen-collecting debts, sweet-talking her way out of trouble, and dreading the day he'd deem her ready to rule the rural drug empire he's built. Her time's run out. The Springfields, her family's biggest rivals, are moving in. Years ago, they were responsible for her mother's death, and now they're coming for Duke's only weak spot: his daughter. With a bloody turf war threatening to consume North County, Harley is forced to confront the truth: that her father's violent world will destroy her. Duke's raised her to be deadly--he never counted on her being disloyal. But if Harley wants to survive and protect the people she loves, she's got to take out Duke's operation and the Springfields. Blowing up meth labs is dangerous business, and getting caught will be the end of her, but Harley has one advantage: She is her father's daughter. And McKennas always win. From a powerful new voice in suspense fiction comes the unforgettable story of a young woman facing the most difficult choice of her life: family or freedom.

This one surprised me! I really liked Tess Sharpe's Far From You, but was less excited about a book that dealt with drug dealing (I like mystery thrillers)... however, I was on the edge of my seat with this book! It's like a more kick ass version of Winter's Bone. I couldn't put it down, and I will never doubt Sharpe again. 😘

I really took my time with this book, and I loved it. It's dark and sharp and I will probably be recommending it all year.

This has been a very bad anxiety week so I haven't been able to read, but I feel myself coming out of it and really want to read this one before it's due back at the library!
I have so many library books I want to read, so I'm disappointed that I couldn't focus on any of them the past few days.

If you like the show Justified, you‘ll like this book. Overall I enjoyed it but I had issues with the lack of editing. Harley is a smart and strong woman who is underestimated by the men in her life. The plot unfolds through her pov but it‘s slightly repetitive. Harley is determined to triumph over her family‘s enemies and to protect those who need it. The lesson of the book isn‘t Don‘t underestimate the Mckennas, but don‘t underestimate a woman.

Brilliantly written, Barbed Wire Heart is a suspenseful, emotional read that captivates the reader right away with a first line that blows them away. “I‘m eight years old the first time I watch my daddy kill a man.” Harley‘s fight for the Rubies - abused women who get away from abusive partners - really drives the desire to end the drug empire in North County. This is a book where the less you know, the better the reading experience

It's been too long since I last posted on here! I've been fighting a very stubborn slump and part of the solution was cutting back drastically on social media time... But with two months slump-free, I'm hoping to slowly start posting again.

Here's a photo of Delilah Bard's paws and a recent read of mine: Barbed Wire Heart by Tess Sharpe. Such a good book! 😻
