In this intimate coming-of-age story set in the late 1970s, a young girl struggles to make sense of the chaos around her during Pakistans political upheaval, where the military revolts, the embassy burns, and a terrible secret tears her world apart. Eleven-year-old Aliya Shah lives a double life in Islamabad, Pakistanat home with her Pakistani father and Dutch mother, and at the American School, where Aliya tries to downplay that she is a half-and-half. But when a hit-and-run driver kills the son of the familys servant, Sadiq, who is also Aliyas dear friend, her world is turned upside down. After she discovers the truth behind the tragedya terrible secret that burdens her hearther conflicted loyalties are tested as never before. Based on the authors own experiences growing up in Islamabad, City of Spies offers a poignant and dramatic portrait of a tumultuous time, as seen through the eyes of a brave and compassionate young heroine struggling to find her place in the gray area between loyalty and complicity, family and country.

While this was a very quick read, it was really only so-so. It felt more like the author was a side character to someone else's story and neither did a good job telling their story or told her own. I appreciated some of the factual history of Pakistan but the truly interesting and important moments of their history, she neither experienced or spoke more than a paragraph on.

This #tradedbook actually came from a Litsy swap for me for #halfbloodbingo #bookbingo. Very well written and nuanced. A kids look at a major political moment In Pakistan.

shellleigh33 @mcipher I do 😊. He is my only boy cat and the sweetest of the bunch. Also I am loving The Seven Husbands. About 1/4 way through but work is getting in the way 😝. I just want to hide somewhere and read 😂. This is my second book by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I got a advance copy of her new book coming out next year. My best friend has got it right now but when she gets done with it I will pass it along to you if you are interested in reading it. 6y

While it is not badly written, this is a book that is not for me. It‘s technically fiction, but based on real events, and I found it dreadfully dull, tedious, slow-going. I think I just need to stop reading literary fiction told from the viewpoint of a child. I cannot connect with the narrator in these cases and spend most of my time waiting for the narrator/author to get to the point. 🤷🏻‍♀️
