But sometimes it's hard to speak his mind, so he fills up notebooks with his thoughts instead. He writes about his mom a lot--they're about as close as they can be, because they have no other family. So when she suddenly tells him she's gay, his world is turned upside down. And if that weren't hard enough for him to accept, her girlfriend is white. Melanin Sun is angry and scared. How can his mom do this to him--is this the end of their closeness? What will his friends think? And can he let her girlfriend be part of their family?

Jacqueline Woodson‘s writing is great, and the story is pretty good. I liked that she tackled the important themes in perceptive, subtle ways. I also liked that Melanin grew as a character but somehow couldn‘t be very sympathetic with him. Not my favourite Woodson.

JW does justice to a story about a single mom and her son. Mom‘s ready to introduce her girlfriend to her son but he‘s not ready to grapple with that...bittersweet

Peddler410 On Facebook at 10:30 EST—tomorrow is her last day and she is announcing the next reader. Kwame Alexander was before Woodson. I‘m trying to find his reading on IG but I don‘t know how Live works over there or where recordings are saved. 5y
