Social distancing isn't so bad when you can have a fire and read in the back yard. Kind of like not having to see people for a change. I know it will grow tiresome quickly though

Still plugging away at this one. Good read, just not much time or energy lately. Settling in for an evening to myself though

I'm not really a "Westerns" girl. I've watched Tombstone only once & then only after reading Doc (also by Russell) but I have loved both books and imagine that's to do with the author & her beautiful writing. I'm completely in love with the Earps & Doc & the way she portrays them. I had a book hangover when I finished this & a NEED to read more about these people in non-fiction so I added a bunch of stuff to my list. A great read!

callielafleur Have you read her book Doc?? It is absolutely amazing. 6y
Bookish_B @callielafleur lol, yes. I mentioned that in my review 😊 Loved it as well. 6y

I am impressed with Russell‘s breadth of interest in subjects and depth of research she does for her books. She drives home with this novel how “history” is fluid and continually redrawn by the tellers and listeners alike. For several reasons this must have been a frustrating, albeit fascinating, piece of history and folklore to delve into.

I‘ll definitely be reading Doc.

The telegraph exchange between Holliday & Katie with the operators‘ commentary was funny enough for me to LOL and then unplug my husband from his podcast and read it aloud. 😆 (This is just a short excerpt from the series of exchanges. Holliday is begging Katie to forgive him.) Really enjoying this book!

rubyslippersreads I need to read this, since I loved 7y
KathyWheeler I didn‘t know there was a sequel to Doc. I need to read Doc, and then read this. 7y
EvieBee Funny! I really need to read this one. I really enjoyed the prequel, Doc. 7y
Tamra @KathyWheeler @EvieBee I haven‘t read Doc yet, but it doesn‘t seem to matter. I‘m glad to hear it was good, I‘ll for sure read it too! @rubyslippersreads 7y

Off to Malaprop‘s bookstore today after some NC BBQ. Woot! Very excited! Good day for it as it‘s been raining since yesterday afternoon and we‘re stuck in the camper.

RebelReader 😫 At least you‘re getting some reading time. 7y
Tamra @RebelReader very true! If it weren‘t for having to entertain kids....... 7y
Lcsmcat Take them to the Biltmore house. That library! I saw it when I was 7 and it inspired me to learn to read in other languages. 7y

Tamra @Lcsmcat they are 10 & 8, would that be interesting enough? 7y
Lcsmcat I loved it at 7. It‘s a beautiful house and grounds, and a working estate. (They make wine.) And the library is lovely. I‘ll try to post a picture of it and tag you. 7y
Graywacke I‘ll second the Biltmore for all ages. Malaprops is special. Also don‘t pass up Downtown Books and News - a great used book store. 7y
Tamra @Graywacke thank you for the rec! 7y
Tamra @Lcsmcat ouch, tickets are pricey. 7y

This book is so well-developed. Focusing on how all the main players of the shootout at the OK Corral got to Tombstone, Russell describes the history through new perspectives—including from the eyes of the women in the Earps‘ lives. I‘m hoping to finish the audio by the end of the weekend! Only 15 more hours to go!☺️

Characters brought to life in such a way that you can almost smell the whiskey on their breath and the dust in their clothes. Excellent.

“To understand the gunfight in Tombstone, stop-now-and watch a clock for 30 seconds. Listen to it tick while you try to imagine one half of a single minute so terrible it will pursue you all your life and far beyond the grave.” Mary Doris Russell

I don't think of myself as a reader of westerns, but I loved this. It's a novelization of the Wyatt Earp and co story in Tombstone and beyond. I appreciated the inclusion of the women here. Well worth a listen or a read.

diovival The description refers to this as a sequel. Do I need to read another book first to enjoy this one or would this work well as a standalone? 7y
Hooked_on_books @diovival it totally works as a standalone. I haven't read the other book but want to now, though I don't feel like I missed anything. 7y

A fitting follow up to Doc, the story follows the Earps in Tombstone, Wyatt's courtship of Josie, and Doc's decline. The historical detail is remarkable, and as far as I can tell, quite accurate.

We worked in the garden in the afternoon, and I rescued these from the new rose arch we installed to try to rein in our Therese Bugnet rose. I wish you could smell these.

Last night after American Gods, I managed to stay awake long enough to start Epitaph. I think it's the only MDR I've not read, which makes me sad because it's wonderful and I want more. But I know she's working on something new, so not horribly sad. It's wonderful.

This is my third Mary Doria Russel Novel and I am in awe of her writing. She truly brings her stories to life paining a picture that you feel part of. If you read this I would encourage you to read to the end. It highlights the hype and misinformation built up by our media and Hollywood surrounding this piece of our history.
