The Tamakis really know how to write teens. Loved this sensitive look at a teen dealing with first infatuation, difficult friendships, with elements of teen suicide, sexual preference, and shoddy adults. Gorgeous art and storytelling.

Pickpick

Youth behaving badly on the Ivory Coast of Africa in the 70s. It's melodramatic, silly, and over the top, but also free of African stereotypes prevalent in the media. Aya herself, ambitious and determined to be a doctor, is sort of a side note in this first volume, but I can't wait for more.

PennyNotSoDreadful Enjoyed the video😂 - thx for sharing!! 8y
estellasrevenge @TheLiterarium I love his fiction but I found this book unrealistic, lazy (employing ridiculous stereotypes), and quietly haughty. Just not my cup. 8y

unrulyreader I suffered through the whole thing on audio, but set it to warp speed (and zoned out) because I just couldn't bring myself to really care. 8y
JessKH I feel like you either love or hate this book. I don't know anyone who's been in between. I tried reading it because a friend adores it but I gave up after a few chapters. Maybe one day I'll try again. 8y
kristaonpurpose Can I confess an opinion probably unpopular for readers/English degree holders? Never read any Murakami and probably never will. The only people I know personally who've read his books are smug and pretentious and it has turned me off of his books. Nope for this girl. 8y
KarenM I read this whilst 'training' (loose term) for my 1st 10km race, and I think it did help me mentally, but I guess if you've never really run / enjoyed running a race it may well not resonate 8y
estellasrevenge @KarenM I do run but unfortunately I found his lackadaisical attitude annoying and his writing lazy in this book. Love his fiction. I have lots more running books on my TBR that I hope I'll enjoy more. 8y
