Set in London in 1837, Anna Mazzola's THE UNSEEING is the story of Sarah Gale, a seamstress and mother, sentenced to hang for her role in the murder of Hannah Brown on the eve of her wedding. Perfect for any reader of Sarah Waters or Antonia Hodgson. 'With this intricately woven tale of trust, self-trust and deceit, Anna Mazzola brings a gritty realism to Victorian London. Beautifully written and cleverly plotted, this is a stunning debut, ranked amongst the best' MANDA SCOTT After Sarah petitions for mercy, Edmund Fleetwood is appointed to investigate and consider whether justice has been done. Idealistic, but struggling with his own demons, Edmund is determined to seek out the truth. Yet Sarah refuses to help him, neither lying nor adding anything to the evidence gathered in court. Edmund knows she's hiding something, but needs to discover just why she's maintaining her silence. For how can it be that someone would willingly go to their own death?

Edmund Fleetwood who is assigned to review the case and subsequent death penalty on Sarah Gale must be one of the most annoying characters that I have come across in a novel and the more I read of him the angrier I became. Putting this aside the novel follows his investigation in depth. It was easy to read and gave descriptions of the period which may have underestimated how harsh that period really was. An interesting read but not that thrilling.

Enjoyable historical fiction with a hint of gothic horror.

Again though I felt it was too long, all the books I‘m reading lately seem to go on and on forever!

I liked the story, the twists and turns and I didn‘t guess the ending at all.

Worth a read 👍🏼

Congrats on your 20k milestone @MommyOfTwo! Thank you for doing this #CinderGiveaway!

I have many favourite books but if I were to pick one of my favourites, it'd be The Unseeing by Anna Mazzola. I love her writing and historical crime fiction (with a blend of fact & fiction) is my favourite genre 😄

[March01] This is still my absolute favourite as I'm still experiencing a bit of book hangover from this book. I always like historical fiction based on true historical events. Everything about #theunseeing from plot to prose is just #FANTASTICO! 😉

It was really difficult to choose the books I love so I had to narrow it down to: Unseeing, The Ringmaster's Wife & Worlds of Ink and Shadow.👍
My big no-no book is Bellevue Square. 👎

🌟 BIG SHOUTOUT to @BookaholicNatty for this amazing #giveaway! 🌟

Sassy_Steph When I finished bellevue square it kind left me asking what the heck did I just read? I didn‘t know it was a part of a trio, so maybe the other books will clear things up? 7y
thereadingowlvina @Sassy_Steph My feelings exactly! I don't know how it could win the Giller Prize award. It was really bad for me. You are right. The next two books may clear up things but I'm not too excited to find out 😐 7y
Sassy_Steph Ya I‘m not sure I‘ll continue on, we shall see!! 7y
Sassy_Steph I too was shocked it got the Giller Prize!! 7y

I had no idea what to expect going into this book but I certainly didn't think I'd be blown away. I thought I had the mystery figured out more then once only to have something else thrown at me pages later that left me clueless. The characters all seemed like real people and the atmosphere of this book was INCREDIBLE. It was even more interesting knowing its was based on a actual murder.

megt This sounds really intriguing and the cover is beautiful! 7y
danibolahood @megt this was such a surprise for me. I was actually a bit annoyed that my hold came in from the library so quickly because I really wasn't in the mood for a historical mystery but I ended up loving it. If you end up reading it I hope you enjoy it! 7y

Part 2?!? Here I am thinking the mystery is almost all wrapped up and then it throws me into a second part? I can honestly say this book keeps me guessing. I have no clue what actually happened or who is guilty.

So at 5:30 I decided I'd had enough with this week and was ready to check out mentally and read for the rest of the night. It is now almost 8:30 and I've finally got myself together and I'm ready to finally take a chunk out of this book. I've got my blankie and my new favourite tea (turmeric glow from David's) and I'm focused. No more shiny things!

suvata How did I miss this one? It‘s right up my alley and this is the first time I‘ve heard about this book. TBR, here it comes! 7y

What an incredibly good book! A #pageturner with haunting characters, suspenseful and gripping plot with lots of twists. It left me wanting more! This #historicalcrimefiction set in #VictorianLondon, is based on the true case known as #TheEdgewareRoadMurder.
I highly recommend this book! If you like #BurialRites and #AliasGrace, this is the book for you!

The picture that had been commissioned of all three of the children together was removed from sight. Instead, her mother took to wearing a mourning brooch, typical of its time but always, to Sarah‘s mind, strange: a miniature painting surrounded with pearls, of Oscar‘s eye. http://mwgerard.com/review-the-unseeing/

Time to start this historical mystery. The opening chapter shows plenty of promise!
