The Blood-Dimmed Tide
The Blood-Dimmed Tide: A John Madden Mystery | Rennie Airth
3 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
Rennie Airth's The Death of Kings is now available from Viking. With the publication of the New York Times Notable Book River of Darkness, Rennie Airth established himself as a master of suspense. The Blood-Dimmed Tide, set in 1932, marks the return of the beloved Inspector John Madden, whose discovery of a young girl's mutilated corpse near his home in rural England brings him out of retirement despite his wife's misgivings. Soon he finds himself chasing a killer whose horrific crime could have implications far afield in a Europe threatened by the rise of Hitler. A riveting, atmospheric, multilayered mystery, this intense and intelligent tale more than delivers on the promise of Rennie Airth's first thriller.

A great police procedural - not as gripping as the first in the series which was phenomenal, but very solid. Had me racing through to the end late last night. (I usually avoid thrilling books for that very reason 😂🤣) Theres something about the 1930s rural/village settings in this series and the dark crimes taking place - it‘s a strange balance but it works for me at least. Definitely in the mystery genre not thriller, ⬇️

Centique would be slow going for those who like something modern and fast paced, (but I like slower convoluted mysteries myself) and the wrap up is too convenient but still very satisfying. The writing and atmosphere is excellent. 3y

This book didn't disappoint at all. I loved the first book so much and was worried I wouldn't love the second one as much. A captivating story which had me riled up and sucked right in. The pacing was excellent and nothing broke my attention. Very dark and disturbing. Can't wait to read the third book.

Nothing like a murder mystery with breakfast
