Don't Touch My Hair!
Don't Touch My Hair! | Sharee Miller
10 posts | 12 read | 9 to read
An entertaining picture book that teaches the importance of asking for permission first as a young girl attempts to escape the curious hands that want to touch her hair. It seems that wherever Aria goes, someone wants to touch her hair. In the street, strangers reach for her fluffy curls; and even under the sea, in the jungle, and in space, she's chased by a mermaid, monkeys, and poked by aliens...until, finally, Aria has had enough!Author-illustrator Sharee Miller takes the tradition of appreciation of black hair to a new, fresh, level as she doesn't seek to convince or remind young readers that their curls are beautiful--she simply acknowledges black beauty while telling a fun, imaginative story.

This book is needed for all children. It teaches how to be your own advocate. No one should touch you unless you give permission. A very important lesson.

MynameisSnow Love it. Do you remember being a child and being forced to hug or kiss family members goodbye? “Give your uncle a hug goodbye” and so on. Ah how we learn as times change on things like this. Not a good thing to do, send a msg that you are only a child, and don‘t belong to yourself. 4y

This was fun to see a child who was able to figure out a way to deal with her problem.

Aria has amazing hair. There‘s just one problem - everyone wants to touch her hair, sometimes without permission. This book teaches young readers personal boundaries, as well as seeking permission to do something. Aria is fun, and the illustrations add to the story perfectly. Letter D for #BBRC #A2Z

After reading this just now, I realized I read this in September and somehow managed to miss reviewing it. A well-told, wonderfully illustrated story about boundaries. A practical addition to a classroom library.
Collage featuring a few of my daughter‘s many hairstyles through the years. 😍

I definitely can relate to this F picture book! It‘s about a girl with beautiful curly hair who must teach others about consent and touching her hair. This would be great for S, especially if you have curly/coily hair! One UDL & EL strategy is offer ways of customizing the display of information (1.1) & 14. simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. SequoiaC123 I would definitely use this book and make connections with students! I also with students about permission/consent and how it is so important to gain it. 5y
hadassajl Absolutely love this picture Sequoia! And I definitely agree that this book could be used to make connections with students and to teach consent. 5y
DrSpalding What kind of fiction? Your first sentence says it all… This is realistic fiction that is easy to relate to. 5y

Aria loves her hair: “It‘s soft and bouncy and grows up toward the sun like a sunflower.” But she does not like people touching it without permission. As she tried to escape the hands in her hair she even goes into the ocean and a jungle for peace. Finding none, she tells everyone, “Don‘t touch my hair!”

This fun and silly story carries a firm message: Don‘t. Touch. The. Hair. And, it‘s okay to say, “No.”
