A Girl Like That

Sixteen-year-old Zarin Wadia is many things: a bright and vivacious student, an orphan, a risk-taker. She's also the kind of girl that parents warn their kids to stay away from: a troublemaker, whose many romances are the subject of endless gossip at school. You don't want to get involved with a girl like that, they say. So how is it that eighteen-year-old Porus Dumasia has only ever had eyes for her? And how did Zarin and Porus end up dead in a car together, crashed on the side of a highway in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia? When the religious police arrive on the scene, everything everyone thought they knew about Zarin is questioned. And as her story is pieced together, told through multiple perspectives, it becomes clear that she was far more than just a girl like that. This beautifully written debut novel from Tanaz Bhathena reveals a rich and wonderful new world to readers; tackles complicated issues of race, identity, class and religion; and paints a portrait of teenage ambition, angst and alienation that feels both inventive and universal.

Started this book at the gym today, I like how it‘s different, immediately it‘s different!

Pickpick

I‘ve read only one paper book during my week in the Yukon (plus 3 audiobooks, plus part of a long ebook). This one is for my YA book club next week. The flags aren‘t for the great writing (it‘s mediocre, actually) but for discussion points. I recommend it for its portrayal of gender discrimination & for an immersion into the lives of Parsi immigrants from India living in Saudi Arabia. Zarin, the central character, is a complex, fascinating mess.

This one was hard to push through. The main character isn‘t that likeable but nobody really is, except Porous. He‘s a friend from home ( Mumbai) that she meets again in Jeddah, where she lives with her aunt and uncle. The male dominated Saudi society, full of privilege and power is hard to stomach as is the female experience of shame, inferiority and dependence. Everyone is horrible to everyone else. The ending is hopeful-ish

I am struggling with this YA book. It‘s set in Jeddah and the oppression of women and girls and the entitlement of boys and men is really hard to stomach. It‘s extreme in this case but really it‘s prevalent worldwide. I want to see how it ends so I‘m gonna keep on keeping on, but it‘s easy to pick up my iPad and troll the webs instead of reading

I absolutely disliked this book set in Saudi Arabia. My review: https://sumaiyyareads.wordpress.com/2018/04/29/book-review-a-girl-like-that/

laurenlovesliterature Beautiful cover though. 7y
Gissy I don't even like the cover. 7y
aleph Wow, thank you for your verdict and very thoughtful review. I didn't make it all the way through as you did well in making clear why this book is one to avoid: namely Islam and Muslims/Saudis negatively drawn across the board and unshaded character portrayals. 7y
