OriginalCyn620 I haven‘t read this. Are you enjoying it? Short story collections are very hit-or-miss for me! 5y
Lcsmcat I loved it. Like most collections some stories worked better for me than others, but they were all thought provoking and well written. 5y

As with most short story collections, some stories resonated more than others. But the opening and closing stories were excellent, as were many of the others. Themes of dislocation and the misunderstandings between people of good intentions, especially between men and women. (Of course, it‘s Atwood, right?)

Emilymdxn I always love her short stories so much! Haven‘t read this collection yet but I want to 5y
Lcsmcat @Emilymdxn This one is from 1977. I understand that the first edition has a story that was since removed from the collection, so I may have to go hunting. 😀 5y

Pickpick

Almost without saying each short story in this collection is beautifully written. For me the poet in Atwood always surfaces in her novels and short stories and they are a joy to read just to experience the writing. The last story, Giving Birth is breathtaking. A mother who is heading to hospital to have her child is joined by her future self. This ghost or spectre simply jumps in the car at a red light. This story is quite brilliant.

AceOnRoam Nice one @Neale 7y
Redheadrambles @Neale your first Litsy review ! Exciting times my friend 😀 7y
Neale I like the short format, you have to really think about what you want to say. :) 7y

ClairesReads Welcome to Litsy mate! A first edition! How amazing!!! 7y
Neale Thanks Claire. Yep it‘s a great edition. Not sure but I think it‘s the only edition with Rape Fantasies in it. I think it was removed from later editions, not sure. 7y
Redheadrambles Do I spy Circe and The Shepard‘s Hut under there ?? 7y
Neale Hahaha. How could you tell. You have a very good eye. :) 7y
Redwritinghood Glad you joined us here on Litsy. I was wondering if other indie buddy readers were on here. 7y
AceOnRoam @Neale you're most welcome! You're catching on quick too👍 7y
AceOnRoam @Neale I think you also have another friend @shawnmooney 7y
Neale Thanks Redwritinghood, Ace put me on to it. Great fun! 7y
Redheadrambles It‘s so cute I feel like we are basically a real book club minus drinks and nibbles @ClairesReads @AceOnRoam @Redwritinghood @Neale minus 4 we haven‘t convinced to go on Litsy yet as far as I know ... 7y
AceOnRoam Actually @Neale it was @Redheadrambles idea originally to ask you but we didn't want to overwhelm you on the technology front. Clearly you are a natural, we needn't have worried 🤣🤣 7y
ClairesReads @Neale @Redheadrambles I just picked up a copy of this one today! 7y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles I totally feel like we are too- it‘s great 7y
Neale I know it,s weird but I feel like I have known you guys for years. Maybe fate led us together. (Don‘t mind me I‘m watching Troy fall of a city on Netflix :) ) Glad to hear you picked up Winton. 7y
Redheadrambles @Neale @ClairesReads if only there was more months in the year I feel like there is enough shared interest to schedule Winton ... 7y
Neale I was thinking the same thing myself. However you do such a wonderful job with the schedule, I will leave it to you captain. ;) 7y
ClairesReads @Neale same!!! 7y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles it really looks like a good one too! 7y
AceOnRoam Oh, are you watching Brad Pitt? 7y
Neale I don‘t think I‘ve read a bad Winton. Breath is simply sensational. 7y
Neale No Ace it,s a series based on the Iliad. No big actors, but it‘s really quite good. Much closer to the epic poem than Troy the movie. It has all the gods and how they have all their favourite hero‘s on both sides. 7y
AceOnRoam Sounds interesting. You will be our goto mythology guru during 7y

Pickpick

The women in these stories are mostly middle-aged and dissatisfied with their lives. There is a pervasive sense of futility in their relationships and little sense that any significant change is possible. Anyone who‘s ever been in a long-term relationship will recognize the miscommunications and words not spoken that pile up over the years.

This is not a happy collection, but I kind of like the way Atwood shines a light on the dark corners.

“Giving Birth”

“Jeanie has seen her before, but she knows little about her except that she is a woman who did not wish to become pregnant, who did not choose to divide herself like this, who did not choose any of these ordeals, these initiations. It would be no use telling her that everything is going to be fine. The word in English for unwanted intercourse is rape. But there is no word in the language for what is about to happen to this woman.”

Found these right where I stored them years ago in my parents' attic when I moved out. 2017 is their year on the TBR list!
