The End Of Alice
The End Of Alice | A.M. Homes
10 posts | 23 read | 33 to read
From the 2013 Orange Prize–winning author of May We Be Forgiven. Only a work of such searing, meticulously controlled brilliance could provoke such a wide range of visceral responses. Here is the incredible story of an imprisoned pedophile who is drawn into an erotically charged correspondence with a nineteen-year-old suburban coed. As the two reveal—and revel in—their obsessive desires, Homes creates in The End of Alice a novel that is part romance, part horror story, at once unnerving and seductive.

'pretentious though it may be, i remain convinced
that my interpretation, my translation, is a more
accurate reflection of her state of mind, far
exceeding that which she is able to articulate
independently, and while putting words in the
mouths of others may be my specialty, my naughty
narration is fast becoming a tired thing. i'm running
out of steam!‘

Mehso-so

I selected this read for my 40 year reading challenge for the year 1996 and it was beyond disturbing. Told from the POV of a pedophile in jail for the murder of a young girl named Alice he corresponds with a teenage girl who shares similar interests. Saying one enjoys this book is messed up. It‘s disturbing so be warned. #19822022 @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Yikes! It does sound disturbing! 3y
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle yeah I took a few days to take this one in. A few times it was super graphic. A really uncomfortable read. But insight into a twisted mind. 3y

#BookTokMadeMeDoIt

Saw a post on the most disturbing reads and naturally I had to find it. Told in the POV of a convicted pedophile and murderer who corresponds via mail with a younger girl who shares his ideals, this was a hard one. The writing wasn't bad but all over the place as you see the gradual decline of the narrator. Graphic at many points and deeply unsettling. I really just don't know what to think....

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 3y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I saw this on a similar (maybe the same) list. I have it but haven't read it yet. 3y
FantasyChick @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I think it's an interesting read. I still don't really know how I feel about it but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts when you get to it! 3y

#3Books that made me uncomfortable
@OriginalCyn620 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

1. I read this knowing it would be uncomfortable, but I regret it.
2. I was way too young and sheltered when I read this.
3. I had to DNF this because it was not a headspace I wanted, or ever want, to be in.

Definitely not for the faint hearted. Found that I could‘ve read the last 3 chapters and got the full story without reading the whole book.

Pickpick

Trigger warnings for so many things in this one: rape, pedophilia, child abuse, violence, etc. The stream of consciousness style is perfected in this book. The characters are so believable that it almost feels like nonfiction. It truly is a dark and deeply disturbing book, but absolutely worth reading.

This was an...interesting book. Definitely left me feeling a little icky after I read it.

HeinrichLyle I think my own book, "Shameless Dick: Odyssey of a Cad" would fit the bill. If you would give it an honest review, I would gladly send you a free copy! 7y

So, I'm a bit of a weirdo and love books that shock and disturb me. The End of Alice comes to mind, as do Tampa, American Psycho and J.G. Ballard's Crash. Anyone got any good ones in mind that are must-reads for weirdos like me?

Notafraidofwords All Things Cease To Appear is a bit disturbing. The Book Of Harlan's ending was so so disturbing. 8y
brendanmleonard eyyyyy another Tampa fan. 8y
brendanmleonard Try this - so shocking/disturbing I threw it across the room at one point. 8y

mauveandrosysky @brendanmleonard I tried that one! I couldn't get through it because I thought the writing was so bad, haha. 😩 But yeah, Jack Ketchum has a messed up mind, for sure. 8y
mauveandrosysky @Notafraidofwords I loooooved All Things Cease to Appear, but didn't find it all that disturbing. I have a high threshold, haha. The Book of Harlan looks devastating and really good. 8y
Notafraidofwords @mauveandrosysky lol my threshold is really low. 8y
Liberty The Wasp Factory! 💯 8y
SusanInTiburon Perfume by Patrick Suskind was a stretch for me. 8y
mauveandrosysky @Liberty Oooh, yes! That has been on my to-read list forever. Bumping it up! 8y
mauveandrosysky @Susanintiburon my friend just read that one recently! I remember loving the movie. Definitely need to check out the book. 8y
Liberty Yes, read Perfume! And Disquiet. I'll stop now. 😊 8y
mauveandrosysky @Liberty adding both...yay! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled The Library at Mount Char! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Also - weird books by Shane Jones: The Lightboxes, The Crystal Eaters. His books are out there and weird but really intriguing. 8y
Lindy Have you read Lightning Rods? 8y
mauveandrosysky @Lindy I haven't, but it looks right up my alley. Adding! 8y
mauveandrosysky @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com those Shane Jones books sound awesome! Especially Lightboxes. 8y
Lindy Miranda July's The First Bad Man might fit your tastes. 8y
Lindy Also, The People in the Trees, Yanagihara's first novel, which has quite a different vibe from A Little Life. 8y
mauveandrosysky @Lindy I loved both of those! You're good! 😀 8y
Lindy @mauveandrosysky Good to know I'm on the right track. If I think of more, I'll let you know. 8y
Lindy @mauveandrosysky Just thought of one with whimsy as well as shock: 8y
Allkat Maybe along the same track- Damage by Josephine Hart, and Notes on a Scandal 7y
HeinrichLyle Based on your tastes, which I definitely share, you may enjoy my own "Shameless Dick: Odyssey of a Cad." I'd be happy to send you a free copy if you'll write an honest review. 7y
