A spellbinding story of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the brutal world of tenth-century England. I have broken my vows. I have murdered innocents. I have trod down the soil over their dead face with my bare heels, and only the moon as witness. I have loved a woman and she ruined me. I have loved a king and yet I ruined him. The year is 937. England is a nation divided, ruled by minor kings and Viking lords. Each vies for land and power. The Wessex king ?thelstan, grandson of Alfred the Great, is readying himself to throw a spear into the north. Behind him stands Dunstan, the man who will control the destiny of the next seven kings of England, and the fate of an entire nation. Welcome to the original game for the English throne.

I liked this book. Full disclosure, I like Conn Iggulden and expected to like this. He does a great job of immersing you in the time period and knows how to tell a good story.

Conn Iggulden never disappoints. Another fascinating story of a fascinating person from history. Dunstan lived through the reigns of seven kings, starting from king Aethelstan, the grandson of King Alfred the Great and considered the first king of England. Dunstan himself is manipulative and misogynistic but cunning and draws you in.

AnneFindsJoy This sounds really interesting, and how cool to visit the ruins! Great picture!!!! 🙌 👑 ⛪️ 6y

julesG St Dunstan's in the East! 😍😍😍 Such a wonderful place. I last visited in early March, I'd spend the day in Greenwich with my daughter and a friend and we took the Thames clipper to the Tower, then walked from there. 6y

And I‘m starting this one today! I loved The Wars of the Roses series by Conn Iggulden so much!! And this one is all about a warrior during the time of Alfred the Great which is another period I love! (Mainly because of The Last Kingdom which people should definitely watch on Netflix, it‘s awesome! 😂) I cannot wait I get stuck in 💪🏻

Crazeedi His genghis Khan series was fabulous too. I'm going to have to read this! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Have you tried the Bernard Cornwell books? I didn‘t know about this book you posted - definitely something for me!! 6y
i.z.booknook @Crazeedi Ooh I find Genghis Khan fascinating! I‘m definitely going to have to read that series next! Thank you for letting me know! 6y

i.z.booknook @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I have heard of the Bernard Cornwall books because they‘re what The Last Kingdom is based on 😍 I couldn‘t make up my mind whether to read them in case I get confused with the tv show 😂 6y
Crazeedi @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I have not read these either, I must check them out! 6y
Graeme2 It may help that Dunstan starts where The Last Kingdom comes to an end. There is a slight overlap in events. 3y
i.z.booknook @Graeme2 oh interesting! I haven‘t read The Last Kingdom but I have them on kindle and I LOVE the tv show! Maybe I need to read those next! 😃 3y

#JanuaryTBR Finish as many of these #currentlyreading as possible. #GroupU the top book is @CouronneDhiver s pick. With the holidays it‘s taking me a bit longer than expected to finish. @Lindy I‘ll tag you when it‘s on its way

Lindy Sounds good. I will be away from home starting later today, returning on January 9, so there‘s lots of time. 6y
