Huntress
Huntress | Malinda Lo
Nature is out of balance in the human world. The sun hasn't shone in years, and crops are failing. Worse yet, strange and hostile creatures have begun to appear. The people's survival hangs in the balance. To solve the crisis, the oracle stones are cast, and Kaede and Taisin, two seventeen-year-old girls, are picked to go on a dangerous and unheard-of journey to Tanlili, the city of the Fairy Queen. Taisin is a sage, thrumming with magic, and Kaede is of the earth, without a speck of the otherworldly. And yet the two girls' destinies are drawn together during the mission. As members of their party succumb to unearthly attacks and fairy tricks, the two come to rely on each other and even begin to fall in love. But the Kingdom needs only one huntress to save it, and what it takes could tear Kaede and Taisin apart forever. The exciting adventure prequel to Malinda Lo's highly acclaimed novel Ash is overflowing with lush Chinese influences and details inspired by the I Ching, and is filled with action and romance.

I‘m a fan of Lo‘s books and I enjoyed this fantasy tale with a f/f romance. I do like the way it ended and the added story at the end. I feel like maybe a bit too much travel time to get to the action but it still read rather well and I always love her characters. Features a sleeping Calli girl. #dogsoflitsy

slategreyskies Awww, she‘s so sweet! I miss having a dog. 🐶💕 4y

Happy Monday! Today has been lovely. Woke up to a wonderful FB message from my hubby, was invited to nails and lunch with my bestie librarian, and watched Hercules when I came home while snuggling my dogs. Now I‘m indulging in Huntress, a f/f romance involving a quest and fae and I‘m enjoying it so far! ❤️ I wish every day was like today. #dogsoflitsy

June 3: Huntress is an excellent YA fantasy read. I read it several years ago and loved it. 17-year-old Kaede and Taisin are on a mission to restore balance to their world, but is there time for a little romance along the way? #yalit #lgbtqbook #lgbt #fantasy #lgbtqfantasy

Geenee Can‘t stomach LGBT...sorry 😕 4y
Kenyazero @Geenee then why are you bothering me? 😏 4y

Geenee @GentlemanHooligan I wouldn‘t eat 🤬 if you put syrup on it and told me it was a pancake 🥞. Also, if we confess our sins He is just and righteous to forgive us our sins. In case you were interested in heaven. 4y
Kenyazero I went ahead and blocked the homophobe that was harassing me. It was a great example for why Pride Month is important, so thanks for that? 4y

I think there is a grammatical error...it says,"she dived". Isn't that supposed to be dove????
The story is interesting although the rapid pov switches are a bit strange. I also really wanted to feel the main characters falling for each other and it was just meh. I felt like there should have been more to it. It felt hollow. And mostly random. The same with some of the plot points....I was like 'wait, did I miss something?'

This is a decent adventure story, prequel to Ash. My only complaint is that the author reads her own book. She's okay but a professional reading this story would be amazing. I kind of feel like I'm at an author reading at my local bookstore. She's a cool person but were they trying to save money or something??? 🤔#lbgtq #kickassheroines #diversebooks

Pretty soon I'll be having a lot more school reading to do, so I'm doing as much pleasure reading as I can now! I am so excited, nervous, scared, elated to finally be going back to school after ten years. Enjoying a moment of rest before a busy day at work today, which I am trying to gear up for but it's not really working.
Also not related to this book since I'm not very far yet, but I wish Litsy had a rating between "pick" and "so-so."

Another nap-time where I am not doing the mounds of paperwork I should be, but sneaking on some reading. Ah well!

Enjoyable but I didn't love it, although I'm not sure whether it was just the mood I'm in currently. The world is well-imagined, and the love story is sweet if underdeveloped. I felt that the pacing was a little off - the epic journey takes most of the book, leading to the big fight resolving quickly and lacking some oomph.

This is honestly between 'pick' and so-so. I loved the characters and their depth, but had some reservations about the plot. Malinda Lo's writing is gorgeous. I would still recommend it.

i am delighted to now be able to spell Xi/Sidhe in TWO fay languages! this book was a lovely read, a new adventure in a fantastical world i am reluctant to leave

WhatDeeReads Such a beautiful story! 9y
JPrecht So I see it described some places online as a prequel to "Ash;" would you recommend I read "Ash" or "Huntress" first? Because you had me and Xi/Sidhe! 9y
jennirl @JPrecht i actually haven't read ASH yet! this comes many years before that one and i didn't have any trouble getting into it 9y
