After reading previous Johannes Cabal books such as Johannes Cabal Necromancer and The Fear Institute,I found this book disappointing. The story really dragged out and failed to keep me interested. Such a shame!

Cabal is on the loose again and so is Madame Zarenyia! Oh my. Madame it appears has designs on Leonie.

Very entertaining! This is the most recent offering in the Johannes Cabal series. If you haven't already read the rest of the series. I highly recommend that you do before reading this book to get the most enjoyment out of this funny, dark fantasy.

"... now that they were surely approaching the dénouement. He had already experienced anagnorisis. Presently, there would be a confrontation, a perepeteia, catharsis, and probably some sort of coda. The one thing they could not predict was whether this was an heroic tale, a tragedy, or even a comedy."

Rather like real life. We won't know what our lives were until after. If then...

Getting back to this after setting it aside for a bit.

Loved the first three, jumped the shark with the fourth and this fifth is not enough to recover the series. Ah well, when I want a Cabal fix, looks like I'll have to re-read one of the first three.

In addition to the interior art being super fun, the story was even better than I had hoped. I will admit that I cried a little at the choices Johannes made. And Madam Zarenyia was flawless as usual with her endearments and dibbing. Perfect lovely end to a well written series. I will miss Johannes and Horst and Leonie and Zarenyia.
