Maker Lab: Outdoors
Maker Lab: Outdoors: 25 Super Cool Projects | Jack Challoner
8 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
Twenty-eight science projects and experiments to be done outside will spark kids' creativity and help them develop science skills through hands-on learning. Projects focus on Earth and the environment, plants and animals, rocks and minerals, and space, bringing science learning home and into the backyard. Young scientists can make a cave system and find out about underground rivers, construct a working model of tectonic plates and learn about earthquakes, build a telescope and look to the planets and stars, and more. Supporting STEAM education initiatives and the Maker Movement, Maker Lab: Outdoors includes 25 interactive projects to inspire kids' creativity and their scientific side, and, as the founder of Maker Faire Dale Dougherty says, "to realize with their hands what they can imagine in their minds." With stunning photography, succinct step-by-step instructions, and detailed explanations, Maker Lab: Outdoors takes readers on a journey of discovery. A must-have for every young scientist curious about their surroundings, and for makers, crafters, and those who enjoy exploring the outdoors.

Sweetkokoro What do you mean missing pages? I got my swap box and posted that I got it, am I missing something? 5y
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro sorry. I didn‘t see it and didn‘t scroll down far enough. But I am glad it got there. And they are so cute. I had Stacy last time and she made me Ewok ears. She does such a good job. 5y
Sweetkokoro It‘s okay, I was worried I had missed something haha. But yes it got here the day after just like you said it would. I am so in love with the Pooh and Piglet she made me. Her skill is wonderful! 5y

I am very excited to say this is going to be a successful #makerswap. All packages are accounted for and most everyone‘s is one it‘s way. To @Kar2b @Avanders you packages should be arriving Friday/Saturday according to senders.

I can‘t wait to see everyone‘s creativity.

pS that is a reused picture of the box I sent @DoonTheGoon

Avanders Sweet! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Maybe a smaller swap is the way to go 😜 5y
LibrarianRyan @Avanders no complaints from me. This is the second time I‘ve had 100% participation. I think it‘s Karmas way of saying thank you since I am always prepared to replace packages if something happens. 5y
Avanders @LibrarianRyan absolutely!! I have tossed around the idea of limited swaps (max participants) and other similar ideas, but haven't implemented them yet 😉 We'll see what 2019 brings. I may be hosted-out... or I may just need a break. ☺️ I'm so glad they go so well for you!! I sent quite a bit of extra packages for fffs... So far for sss it's looking like we're doing a bit better overall.. though there are a few late (but explained!) packages 😔 5y
LibrarianRyan @Avanders it does suck the people that sign up and then don‘t participate. Bad swappers. But I fully believe there are also bad hosts. Not you of course. But I keep a list of peoples swaps I will never do again. There‘s so many new people and now it seems we have bots and just uggggg 5y

My answers

Plus I love peeler beads and cardboard taxidermy (which is a type of paper crafting i suspense) and am a master quilter.

Not tried but would like to: glass blowing, carving, stained glass, wreath making,

What can I say I get bored easily.

#makerswap

Trashcanman You apparently don't get bored of making toast since you got two toasters! Such opulence! 6y
LibrarianRyan @Trashcanman I blame my mom. She borrowed toaster 1 and I didn‘t see it for years. Josh moved in and we bought toaster 2. I move into a new house and mom gave be back toaster 1. Apparently they were not allowed to h@ve them at work any more. But now that you mention it, I could do with a bagel. 6y

vkois88 Oh, are you going to do this every few months? If so, that's exciting! 6y
LibrarianRyan @vkois88 probably 2 maybe three a yeah as long as there is interest. Right now there are only 7 signed up. 6y
vkois88 If I didn't have about 5 things planned over the next few months, I'd sign up again 😕 6y

DoonTheGoon Hoping you'll run this again soon! The first was so much fun and my brain is buzzing with ideas for the next! Happy New Year my friend! 5y
LibrarianRyan @DoonTheGoon I am. I‘m also going to do something similar/smaller for those who think they are barely crafty. I‘ve got to sit down with a calendar. I‘m thinking altered book swap after a Litsy Awards, the maybe may/ June for maker swap, but don‘t hold me to that. I will be sure to tag you. 5y
DoonTheGoon @LibrarianRyan Awesome thanks!!!! 😁 5y

We made an experiment from this book and it worked! I was especially impressed because we have dairy allergies and had to use coconut cream and almond milk.
Hooray for handmade ice cream!

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a perfect book for summer. Even if you child did only one activity a day, they will be better educated , and have had a lot of fun by the time the new school year roles around. The illustrations and real pictures are plentiful, the instructions easy to understand. And at the end of each activity the cause and effect are explained in How it Works, and they also give a Real World Science example of the concept. Well done.

Itchyfeetreader This looks cool. 6y

Hey everyone, this is a #MakerSwap Check In. We should all try to have packages out by Saturday, but next Tuesday is the last possible day to ship and have it possibility arrive on time. Please aim for Saturday. Open day is June 15.

If you are tagged below it means you have not posted that a package has been sent or that I have not seen it.

I still have 2 packages to send myself.

bullbunny Hopefully have it sent out before Friday 6y
Aleida Mine went out Friday. @Smarkies 🛩 (edited) 6y

vkois88 It should be out by the end of the week. Had to redo part of it, which set me back a few days. As soon as I finish, it's just a matter of packaging and getting it out. Whenever I send it, I'll be using 2 day regardless 6y
BookaholicNatty Mine will definitely be out before Saturday!!! Finishing up project today. Everything else is done and in the box 6y
theresidentromantic I'm finishing up shopping today :) 6y
LectricSheep I‘m just waiting on some products to come in the mail— everything else is ready to go out. Assuming the post office doesn‘t mess up too badly, I‘ll be able to get everything out by Saturday. 👍🏻 6y
Amabear Sending on Friday! All ready! 6y
LapReader Just got to make the post office after work. 6y
CSeydel It‘s very very nearly there. 😬Was planning to ship yesterday but I‘m still doing a bit of finishing work on it. Definitely today or tomorrow at the latest. 6y
CSeydel @ameliask8 is also in the thick of it. It‘s her last 2 weeks of school (which I do not think she realized when she signed up, that the deadline would coincide with this busy time). And I didn‘t originally know she was planning a food project that couldn‘t be posted early. 😕 Still - she‘s on track to ship no later than Friday, and Priority Mail-willing, it will arrive early next week. 6y
Sarz I'll be using this long weekend to get it finished, then sending express (overnight) on Tuesday. 6y
LibrarianRyan @CSeydel I completely understand double scheduling herself. Done it a time or two myself. Wish her good luck. 6y
ReadingRover I should be good to go by the end of the week. I always use UPS so that helps too. Phew!😅 6y
MrsGagnonreads2024 Already answered the email 😁 6y
aschermetz My package will not ship til Monday. It is a food product and I want it as fresh as possible. It is going one state over and I ship via UPS Ground so plenty of time to get there for the open date. Thanks for checking in! (edited) 6y
Tera66 @LibrarianRyan will shoot for Saturday! 6y
teebe I‘m sending Thursday or Friday, but it‘s only going to take about a day and half to get there. 6y
rustoryhuf Mine has been sent and swap partner posted a pic of it a few days ago. Good to go! 6y
Smarkies @Aleida will keep a lookout for it. 😁 6y
Aleida I‘ve already opened mine! Didn‘t know there was a specific date. I won‘t post pics till the 15th. 😬🤭 6y
LibrarianRyan @Aleida @ReadingRover has opened hers as well but then again I hand delivered it and she had to get it to fit with all the other book Expo stuff. 6y
Aleida Ok well that does make me feel better. 6y
