Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations
Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations | John McCain, Mark Salter
24 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
In this candid new political memoir from Senator John McCain, an American hero reflects on his life--and what matters most. "I don't know how much longer I'll be here. Maybe I'll have another five years. Maybe, with the advances in oncology, they'll find new treatments for my cancer that will extend my life. Maybe I'll be gone before you read this. My predicament is, well, rather unpredictable. But I'm prepared for either contingency, or at least I'm getting prepared. I have some things I'd like to take care of first, some work that needs finishing, and some people I need to see. And I want to talk to my fellow Americans a little more if I may." So writes John McCain in this inspiring, moving, frank, and deeply personal memoir. Written while confronting a mortal illness, McCain looks back with appreciation on his years in the Senate, his historic 2008 campaign for the presidency against Barack Obama, and his crusades on behalf of democracy and human rights in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Always the fighter, McCain attacks the "spurious nationalism" and political polarization afflicting American policy. He makes an impassioned case for democratic internationalism and bi-partisanship. He tells stories of his most satisfying moments of public service, including his work with another giant of the Senate, Edward M. Kennedy. Senator McCain recalls his disagreements with several presidents, and minces no words in his objections to some of President Trump's statements and policies. At the same time, he offers a positive vision of America that looks beyond the Trump presidency. The Restless Wave is John McCain at his best.

I believe that when John McCain died it wasn't a loss just for the US but for the entire world. This is a detailed look at ways in which he helped to fight inhumane conditions around the world. I never realized how much he did. I felt he presented everything in a clear way and while he made his opinions clear he never faulted anyone for opinions that differed from his own. A great man and a great look at his life.

Inspiring and courageous account of John McCain‘s life and the times in which he lived. In the end I found hope. I pray others will read this and reach out to build the common ground again and engage those who differ from you as people rather than as adversaries. The Restless Wave the America he loved dearly and served with all his heart.

John McCain was an incredible man. My only complaint with this book is I felt he spent a lot of time on foreign relations which I personally am not well versed in, but his stories of his relationships with other politicians and his personal stories are just amazing. I sobbed right through his conclusion. 😭😭😭

Current Audio. I almost didn‘t listen to this when my gold came in, but I started listening this afternoon while doing housework. I cried through the intro (McCain reads the introduction), and am really enjoying most of this. McCain was one of the good ones.

gradcat I agree 💯 percent! Not my politics, but I admire the way he followed his own path. 5y

Very true. My ancestors benefited from this as they moved eastward, settling in the Molotshchna area of what now is S. Ukraine. My maternal grandpa‘s mom came from a very wealthy family in which they raised silkworms. Should note that when my grandpa and his family came over in 1926, they had no money. $500 was lost we think in Moscow. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molotschna

Great way to end this chapter on the torture during the first decade of this century.

What he is referring to is a 2014 unclassified report that was released by the Senate Intelligence Committee, of which he was an ex officio member as a result of him being the chairman of the Armed Services Committee. It also means that Trump needs Congressional approval for things like water boarding, etc.

melissajayne As a 🇨🇦, I hope that both Congress and the Senate go blue and that this never happens again!! Blue wave 🌊 is a coming. (edited) 6y

Stumbled? Misjudgments? The woman was the laughing stock of 2008 campaign, Mr. McCain. And there were quite a few. I remember watching Countdown and almost every night she was on the Worst Person of the Day list pretty regularly. She couldn‘t answer a softball question from Katie Couric on what newspapers and magazines she read without bumbling through it.

I can‘t get the song Danny Boy out of my head since his funeral. It was such a beautiful rendition of the song at the service at the National Cathedral on Saturday.... 😢

melissajayne I should note that I like the song it‘s just that I‘ve heard a couple times in the last few years. A former GM of my favourite NHL team, who passed away a number of years ago, also liked the song and was sung prior to a game https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KqEKwnHkkn0 (edited) 6y

Senator John McCain passed away peacefully today. I remember the 2008 presidential campaign, when his supporter called Obama an Arab and untrustworthy, McCain took her microphone and corrected, “he is a family man who I just happen to have disagreement with on fundamental issues.” He ran that campaign with grace and honor. I respect him immensely. RIP senator.

Hooked_on_books He lived his life with grace in a way many do not. May more politicians follow his lead than not. 6y
EliNeedsMoreShelves I quite often did not agree with him, but I always respected him. Our country desperately needs more leaders like Senator McCain. 6y

I am really, truly enjoying this. Senator McCain is candid, pulling no punches about anything, and just really comes across as genuinely wanting the best for this country. It‘s funny at times, serious at others, and just...I feel like this is a great read for anyone who might not be feeling like bipartisanship is possible right now. #therestlesswave #johnmccain

I can‘t say I always agree with Senator McCain‘s politics, or some of the things he‘s done and said. But I appreciate him for his candor, his bravery, and the extreme sacrifices he has made for his country in these last sixty years of service. I also appreciate that, in whatever time he may have left, he is doing his damnedest to help this country remember what he, and countless others, fought for in the first place. To be worthy of that fight.
