Escape from Lucien | Kazu Kibuishi

I have used the Amulet series (and Bone) to help students get into reading by recommending graphic novels. The book has a combination of imagery and words that creates another world for students to dive in to. The story is also a long heroes journey to defeat the unruly king and has good moral lessons as well.

This is a graphic novel following Emily and her friends/family on a journey to Lucien. This story follows their journey looking for a special beacon they need to defeat the elf king. They traverse war ravaged towns and travel into the void where Emily learns the history and secrets with the elf king with the help of Max who has turned back to his real age. The book ends with a fight between the gang and the Elf Kings guards and is a good read.

I‘m really feeling this right now: “Trust your instincts…And not making decisions can prove to be the worst decision of all.” You are so right, talking fox guy.

Book Six: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cursed stones, parasitic shadow thingies, an underground city. World building.

Book Seven: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The stones are like a cult leader, preying on the vulnerable. Emily‘s not as strong as she thinks. And assassin elf dude is back.

Book Eight: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
A massive, fiery Phoenix, a Stonekeeper giant, colossus robots. Hell‘s bells, I thought this was the last book, but there‘s one more with an undetermined pub date this year. FML.

Cinfhen Assassin elf dude 😁what am I missing....xx 4y
HOTPock3tt This sounds amazing! I‘m wondering what I‘m missing too! 😍 4y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen @HOTPock3tt It‘s middle grade, so really not that exciting. 😂 But entertaining enough. (edited) 4y

TheBookHippie These are so fun. Kids read the covers off them in the school library. 4y
britt_brooke @TheBookHippie They really are entertaining! I bought the first book for my then 7-year-old, but the car crash at the beginning devastated his sensitive little heart ☺️ and he refused to read the rest of the book. So I decided to read it recently, then promptly requested the rest from the library. (edited) 4y
TheBookHippie @britt_brooke I replaced the set right before lockdown last year and was so happy kids had them at home reading them 🤣 for months... 4y
britt_brooke @TheBookHippie 😂 That‘s awesome! 4y

Amulet, a lovely graphic novel series geared toward a younger audience, but, surprisingly, has some darker tones to the narrative and the artwork. I chose this as my #allagescomic for the #readharderchallenge2017 and am glad to have chosen this series because it's exceeded my expectations; it's fun to read, the artwork is great, and it's really refreshing to see a young, female protagonist's story not bound by a story arc based around romance.
