Reflections in a Golden Eye
Reflections in a Golden Eye | Carson McCullers
6 posts | 9 read | 11 to read
Set on a Southern army base in the 1930s, REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE tells the story of Captain Penderton, a bisexual whose life is upset by the arrival of Major Langdon, a charming womanizer who has an affair with Penderton's tempestuous and flirtatious wife, Leonora. Upon the novel's publication in 1941, reviewers were unsure of what to make of its relatively scandalous subject matter. A critic for Time Magazine wrote, "In almost any hands, such material would yield a rank fruitcake of mere arty melodrama. But Carson McCullers tells her tale with simplicity, insight, and a rare gift of phrase." Written during a time when McCullers's own marriage to Reeves was on the brink of collapse, her second novel deals with her trademark themes of alienation and unfulfilled loves.

Mehso-so

I‘m not sure this was for me. There was a psychological suspense element that was well done but, beyond that, there wasn‘t much here. The writing was good enough to keep me going but it was a short book so that wasn‘t really an issue. This was my first McCullers so I may give her more famous novel a shot and see if that agrees with me more.

@Karkar is holding a very generous giveaway!! Thank you so much for the opportunity. Here's a stack of favorites of mine, I could never pick a favorite. As much as I like WWII fiction, as you can see, I'd love to win and read The Ghost Bride! It sounds very magical and I hadn't heard of it before. #mymistake
Thanks again! 👏👏🔥💝

Karkar Oh you have some good one in there! 7y
BiblioLitten I chose the same one for the same reason 😀 7y

Pickpick

Bizarre small novel set on a southern army base in 1938 with an odd cast of characters including a major, his wife, a captain and his wife, a filipino, a private and a wild horse. In a way they are all in a heat of desire, pain, sexual tension and you know something is going to burst open but what, when and to whom. Really a work in emotion, temperature and atmosphere.
