Matthew Reilly, the "New York Times" bestselling author and "pedal-to-the-metal action novelist" "(Publishers Weekly)," is back in high gear on the greatest treasure hunt of all time -- a headlong race to find the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In ancient times, a Golden Capstone was placed atop the Great Pyramid at Giza during a rare solar event called the Tartarus Rotation. Once every 4,500 years, a superhot sunspot -- the Tartarus Sunspot -- aligned itself with Earth and caused immense worldwide flooding and sun-scorching. It is said that when the Capstone sat atop the Great Pyramid, no such flooding or solar damage occurred. And, according to legend, whosoever places the Capstone on the pyramid at the next Tartarus Rotation will gain absolute power over Earth for the next 1,000 years. In 2006, the Tartarus Rotation will come again, but the Capstone is nowhere to be found. With the fate of global dominance hanging in the balance, nearly every world power sends forth its troops to locate the Capstone. Among them are the United States, the European Union, Israel, ruthless terrorists, and one other unusual force: a coalition of seven smaller nations that have decided that the Capstone is too powerful for any one country to hold.So they band together against all odds and send an eight-man team to take on all the great forces in the chase. Led by an Australian super-soldier named Jack West Jr., the team includes a Canadian professor, two crack Irish commandos (one of whom is female), a Spanish paratrooper, a Jamaican soldier, an Arab commando, and a daredevil New Zealand pilot. And with them always is a little girl named Lily, the ten-year-old daughter of the Oracle of Siwa-- one of only two people in the world who can decode an ancient text that leads to the Capstone. This stalwart group embarks on a global journey filled with booby-trapped mines, stupendous ancient wonders, gigantic evil forces, and adventure beyond imagination. From the Colossus of Rhodes to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, from the Lighthouse at Alexandria to the Great Pyramid itself, fasten your seatbelts and hang on as the author of "Ice Station" and "Scarecrow" takes you on the adventure of your life!

It wasn‘t completely terrible. I never knew how much I loved character development until I read this book. It was like Indiana Jones meets The A Team and I was here for it, but ultimately the story was so flat. Ain‘t no one gonna break the neck of a nile crocodile with their bare hands. I don‘t care if you‘re one forearm is mechanical. I wanted action-adventure, but what I really wanted was a well written action-adventure. Bummer. ⭐️⭐️

I spent nap time yesterday finishing book 1 in the Jack West Jr series instead of doing housework or catching up with sleep myself. I‘m re-reading them all ahead of the penultimate book which comes out next week.

These books have completely implausible plot lines & action sequences and Mr Reilly is a little over keen on the use of italics and exclamation marks but they are perfect escapism & such good fun. Perfect for lockdown times.

Book 4/2021

I‘ve just picked these up from the library. Time to catch up before reading the penultimate book in the series this month!

I first discovered Matthew Reilly 20 years ago when Ice Station was published a friend gave me his copy to take on holiday. I was hooked!

I haven‘t read any for years but I feel like this is the perfect time to escape into one of his adventure stories.

Today the superb Jack West Junior Series by Matthew Reilly. Great action, great characters, historical backdrops, and Treasure Hunts. These books are so fast paced and totally love them. Check them out!

He has also written some good standalones and the Scarecrow series which base on the first one is also a first rate series.

Andrew65 Book 1 also published as the Seven Deadly Wonders 4y
BookDragonNotWorm I loved the Scarecrow series! Mother was my favorite! 4y
MsMelissa I was expecting to see this series on your list. I‘ve only read book one, which was great, but have the next three ready to go. 4y
Andrew65 @Book_Fiend_Melissa The good news is I think book 1 is the weakest. 4y

Cringe-inducing dialogue, curse-inducing pacing, and characters about as deep as my sink. I wouldn't call myself a fan of the action archaeology genre, but I couldn't recommend this one to anybody. #TAGbookclub

Day 21 - #AmazingAdventure #JazzyJune

This is an action-packed fun adventure series which I thoroughly enjoy. The books have everything; intrigue and conspiracy, heroes and bad guys, clever plot twists, well researched locations, great humor and non-stop action.

“Nobody writes action like Matthew Reilly." -- Vince Flynn

"Exciting and Entertaining." -- Chicago Sun Times

"A nonstop rollercoaster ride." -- Library Journal

My favourite Australian author would have to be Matthew Reilly, talk about fast paced action thrillers with non-stop high octane action, great characters and historical backdrops. Love his Jack West Junior Series and can‘t wait for The Three Secret Cities to be published in October.

How are you enjoying this one Melissa?,

Melissa_J It‘s good. It‘s non-stop action so I just want to keep reading. I have a few issues with the writing (Reilly is the king of the exclamation point!), but am willing to forgive these issues because I‘m engaged with the story. (edited) 7y
Andrew65 @Melissa_J I'd best not say too much as I over use the exclamation mark!!!! 😂 I agree definitely fast paced, and the good news is in my opinion they only get better. Wouldn't describe them as the best ever writing but does provide a cracking read overall. (edited) 7y

Mehso-so

As a lover of Old Egypt I has to pick this one. Titled a thriller but more an adventure story. It is nicely written, but I could see the main plot twist coming. Unfortunately the whole story is based upon a myth which is not true. It's not credible. That's why I gave it the So-So. But I liked the idea of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, they were described in a magnificient way.

First of all, I didn't finish the book. I simply couldn't. It started off on a positive note, like a lot of first dates I've been on. Unfortunately it ended with a fake phone call, sudden emergency, gotta run - it's not you it's me kind of ending. I'm actually surprised I made it to page 70.

You can read my full review on Goodreads

sarinalangerwriter What a shame! I hate not finishing books but sometimes, rarely, I see no point in reading on :/ 7y

I can't wait to get properly stuck into re-reading this beauty after exams. It's a wonderful, thrilling, mystery of adventure. The rich history of the original wonders of the world is told fabulously through the strong characters and excellent story.
